Chan 2024: Ruto promises Sh2.5m to each Harambee Stars player if they beat Zambia
President William Ruto has promised each member of Harambee Stars squad a cash reward of Sh2.5 million should Kenya beat Zambia in the team’s final Group ‘A’ match of 2024 African Nations Championship (Chan).
Speaking when he met the team on Monday at Pullman Hotel in Upper Hill, Nairobi, President William Ruto pledged to give each member of Harambee Stars squad Sh2.5 million should they beat Zambia on Sunday at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.
He congratulated the players on their 1-0 victory over Morocco in Group ‘A’ on Sunday at Kasarani, and also delivered Sh42 million to the squad, fulfilling his promise of rewarding each person in Harambee Stars’ 42-man squad with Sh1 million for every match they win at 2024 Chan, and Sh500 000 for every match they draw during the competition that Kenya is co-hosting with Tanzania and Uganda.
“I am also here to fulfill my promise. We had agreed that if you do your part, I will reward you as promised,” President Ruto told the squad on Monday before announcing new incentives for their upcoming matches.
“If you win against Zambia, I will reward each one of you with Sh2.5 million,” Ruto said to cheers and claps from the squad.
The President also responded to a request the squad had made about being considered for allocation of houses under the Affordable Housing Projects.
“If you win your quarterfinal match, each one of you will get Sh1 million and a two-bedroom house,” Ruto told the squad. “Winning the semifinals will earn each one of you Sh1 million and a three-bedroom house,” the President added.
The victory against Morocco was Harambee Stars’ first ever against the Atlas Lions, having lost thrice and drawn twice against them in their five previous meetings.
The win also ended Morocco’s record unbeaten run of 14 matches in Chan competitions.
Tusker FC forward Ryan Ogam scored Kenya’s winner in the 42nd minute, while goalkeeper Byrne Omondi was voted the man of the match after protecting Harambee Stars’ lead following the sending off of Ogam’s club teammate Chrispine Erambo in the 45th minute.
