What you need to know:
- Tusker coach Charles Okere blamed his team’s loss to goalkeeping error and his players failure to unlock Gor Mahia’s defence.
- KCB moved up three places in the standings after beating Mara Sugar FC 1-0 in a closely-contested match played at the Awendo.
Gor Mahia’s assistant coach, Bismark Mensah, has urged his players to carry the momentum from Saturday's 1-0 victory over Tusker in the Football Kenya Federation Premier League to the final day of the season.
The win took Gor Mahia to 19 points from eight matches. The 10th round fixture was played at Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani.
“We lost our first match, and won four consecutive fixtures, then drew another. Since then, we have won twice consecutively. To win the league you have to win many matches. This win is good enough, although we didn't play well today and our attack was not perfect,” Mensah said.
“We have a game midweek, and we have to work hard to get back to our best. I hope we can build on this and cushion ourselves in the title race to the final day of the season,” he added.
Gor Mahia, who have two games in hand, opened a four-point gap at the top of the standings ahead of second-placed Kakamega Homeboyz, who host Posta Rangers in Kakamega on Sunday from 2pm. Tusker have collected 12 points from 10 matches.
Tusker coach Charles Okere blamed his team’s loss to goalkeeping error and his players failure to unlock Gor Mahia’s defence.
“He (the goalkeeper) blundered and that is not acceptable. We tried to get back into the game but it wasn't possible despite getting some clear-cut chances. We have to work on our game so that we can get consistent wins,” said Okere.
Closely-contested match
Gor Mahia scored the match winner in the seventh minute when Collins Odhiambo sent a back pass to his custodian Brian Opondo who failed to clear the ball.
Tusker responded with a series of attacks on Gor Mahia with experienced forward Dennis Oalo coming close many times, but his efforts were cleared by Gor’s defensive duo of Michael Kibwage and Paul Ochuoga.
Meanwhile, KCB moved up three places in the standings after beating hosts Mara Sugar FC 1-0 in a closely-contested match played at the Awendo Green Stadium in Migori County.
December Kisaka found the back of the net after just 19 seconds for what is the fastest goal this season.
Kisaka pounced on a loose ball following a defensive lapse by Mara Sugar FC players to fire home a thunderous shot.
Having recorded two consecutive draws, the bankers were determined to put an end to a series of disappointing results.
To achieve that, KCB’s coach Robert Matano named a strong line-up, which included three former Mara Sugar FC players.
