Gor Mahia beat Kakamega Homeboyz to end 3-match winless streak

What you need to know:
- Coach Charles Akonnor, whom a section of Gor fans have been calling for his departure, was clearly a relieved man.
- Nairobi United beat Tusker 1-0 at SportPesa Arena in Murang’a as Mathare United downed Sofapaka by the same score.
Gor Mahia regained top spot of the 18-team SportPesa League after 11 days as pressure on their Ghanaian coach Charles Akonnor eased with a solitary goal win over tough Kakamega Homeboyz at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, on Wednesday.
The win took Gor Mahia’s points tally to 23, two more than second-placed KCB, who had taken leadership of the table on Tuesday following their 4-2 thumping of APS Bomet at Kasarani.
But more importantly, at least in the camp of K’Ogalo and their coach, the result ended a rare three-match winless streak.
The last time Gor underwent this cold streak was last season when they lost 2-1 to City Stars, drew 0-0 with Muranga Seals, and 1-1 with AFC Leopards before beating Ulinzi 3-2.
Akonnor, whom a section of Gor fans have been calling for his departure, was clearly a relieved man.
“My boys did well. It was very important that we won today. Always, our aim is to win, but today it was crucial that we did so after the difficult moments,” said the former Ghana international.
“Nothing matters more than winning and today we did that. With this win, we can get our confidence back. We will build on this for our coming matches,” he added.
Akonnor also spoke of them having to be “clever” against a team “that kept coming at us”.
He rued the many chances his team wasted. “We were impatient and lacked composure.”
Akonnor benched the team’s captain, Austin Odhiambo, who was used as a second-half substitute.
Two-week Christmas break
“Austin is one of us and today he was on the bench,” Akonnor explained his team selection.
Gor Mahia next play Nairobi United on Sunday before the league takes a two-week Christmas break.
The match against Nairobi United has all the markings of a grudge affair after “Naibois” defeated Gor Mahia 2-1 in this year’s MozzartBet Cup final in June.
“I will not talk about Nairobi United,” Akonnor kept his cards close to his chest.
But against Bandari, a 1-1 result, he said: “We could not play our game because the field was not good. Today, we could keep the ball and keep going.”
“It has been a long year for some of our players. Some of them played in the national team and they have played so many matches that there is an element of fatigue, which can be mental and physical. After Sunday’s match, there will be a break, and we can work that out,” said Akonnor.
Gor Mahia’s winner against Homeboyz was scored by Alpha Onyango in the 19th minute, and what a thing of beauty.
Enock Morrison floated an outswinging corner that Homeboyz cleared straight to the patch of Onyango who struck it with venom to the bottom right corner of the goal.
His first goal of the season delivered Gor Mahia’s first win in four league matches.
Are the 21-time record champions back in the groove? Time will tell.
In other matches on Wednesday, home side Nairobi United beat Tusker 1-0 at SportPesa Arena in Murang’a as Mathare United downed Sofapaka by the same scoreline at the Police Sacco Stadium in Nairobi.
At the Gusii Stadium, favourites Shabana were held to a goalless draw by Mara Sugar.
