What you need to know:

  • Gor Mahia’s acting coach, Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno, rushed to the dressing room at the final whistle.
  • Zico took over as acting coach after Gor Mahia fired Brazilian Leonardo Neiva on November 13.

In a brazen display of hooliganism, fans of Football Kenya Federation club Gor Mahia on Sunday attacked the center referee as the reigning champions lost 1-0 defeat to Bidco United in a league match at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos County.

Erick ‘Michu’ Michubu scored the all-important goal via a penalty in a match Bidco United dominated.

But the fans were clearly irked by referee's decision to award to Bidco United.

Then all hell broke loose as soon as Michubu scored the winning goal as Gor fans hurled objects at the technical bench.

Perhaps miffed by the loss, and keen to avoid indignation from his own fans, Gor Mahia’s acting coach, Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno, rushed to the dressing room at the final whistle and didn’t attend the post-match press conference.

Former Gor Mahia player Otieno took over as acting coach after the club fired Brazilian Leonardo Neiva on November 13 due to a string of poor results.

Before his unceremonious exit, Neiva had also been targeted by the club’s fans from time to time.

In the last three matches, Gor Mahia have recorded identical 2-0 wins against Kakamega Homeboyz and Mara Sugar respectively. The team also beat FC Talanta 3-2 in a midweek fixture.

Despite the loss, K’Ogalo remained fourth in the 18-team Kenyan Premier League standings on 17 points after 10 rounds of matches, while Bidco are 12th on 14 points from 12 rounds.

In a top-of-the-table clash at Ukunda Grounds in Kwale, leaders KCB and Bandari played out to a 1-1 draw. Bandari drew first blood in the 45th minute when Shariff Amubwombe scored with him header from a corner kick by William Wadri.

But then Amubwombe was at fault after he delayed to clear the ball allowing Derrick Otanga pounced on the loose ball and level the scores in the 85th minute.

At Gusii Stadium, midfielder Brian Michira netted a brace as hosts Shabana hit FC Talanta 2-0 on Sunday.

Michira has scored all the goals that Shabana have scored in their past three home matches. He grabbed his first brace of the season when Shabana beat AFC Leopards 2-1 at Gusii Stadium on November 27.

Then he struck a beautiful free kick that rescued a point for the Kisii-based against Posta Rangers on December 4 at the same venue. As a result Michira emerged the team’s player for the month of November.

After the weekend matches, KCB top the league table on 23 points from 12 matches. Tusker, who beat Mathare United 2-0 on Saturday, are second on the log on 21 points, while Bandari have dropped to third on 20 points from 12 matches.

Sunday results:

Gor Mahia 0  Bidco United 1

Shabana 2 FC Talanta 0

Bandari 1  KCB 1

Posta Rangers 0  Kariobangi Sharks 0
