The debate as to who between Kariobangi Sharks and Mombasa United will play in the 2026/2027 Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKF-PL) will be decided today (Tuesday) when the two teams clash in the second leg of promotion/relegation play-off.
The match will be played at Ulinzi Sports Complex in Nairobi from 2pm. It is a classic David versus Goliath battle that has already delivered drama.
In the first leg played on Thursday at a packed Mbaraki Stadium in Mombasa, lower-tier league team Mombasa United stunned FKF-PL side Kariobangi Sharks 2-1 to take a slender to the decisive return leg.
Spurred by a vociferous home crowd, Mombasa United took the lead in the 63rd minute when Dennis Mabeya calmly converted from the penalty spot. Ten minutes later, in-form striker Waziri Shentembo doubled their lead with a clinical finish to make it 2-0.

But just when Kariobangi Sharks looked dead and buried, midfielder Wayne Otieno popped up with a crucial away goal in the 83rd minute to keep the tie alive. That single goal could yet prove to be the most important moment of the playoff.
This play-off was not initially on the SportPesa Premier League calendar. It is the product of FKF’s mediation after a High Court directive in Murang’a halted the kick-off of the 2026/27 league season following a stalemate on promotion and relegation of teams in the top league.
Mombasa United preferred direct promotion to the top league in line with 2019 rules, but Kariobangi Sharks preferred a play-off in line with 2025 rules.
In the end, both clubs agreed to determine who between them takes up the 18th and final slot in the top league in a two-leg play-off. Under the format, the team with the superior aggregate score after both legs will play in the Premier League next season.
For Kariobangi Sharks, this is about survival. William Muluya’s side finished 16th in the 2025/26 Premier League, forcing them into the playoff.
For a club that has established itself as a stable top-flight side and a conveyor belt of talent for Harambee Stars, relegation would be a disaster. They came into the first leg as favourites but were outfoxed in Mombasa.
For Mombasa United, it is about a chance of playing in the top league for the first time. Third-place finishers in the NSL last season, Mombasa United have never played in the Kenyan top flight.
Promotion would mean Mombasa County will now have a second team other than Bandari in the top league, a big reward for project that has been building quietly for many seasons. They now stand 90 minutes away from that dream.
Coach William Muluya is expected to go all-out on attack. In the first leg, he fielded a strong side which included Collins Omondi in goal, defenders Steve Mbulere, Zablon Kutera and Ian Taifa, with captain Patillah Omotto and Ghai Panchol controlling the midfield. Upfront, he relied on Faiz Opande, Keagan Ndemi, Frankline Amollo and Austine Tandasi.
Sharks need at least a 1-0 win to force extra time. Because of that away goal they scored, a 1-0 win would be enough for them to remain in the top league.

Any win by a two-goal margin will also keep them in the top league outright. Expect Muluya to push his full-backs high and introduce more pace early in the second half.
Mombasa United, on the other hand, have the luxury of playing on the result. Any draw is enough to take them up. A 1-0 defeat would condemn them to the NSL for another season.
Their coach will likely set up in a compact 4-5-1, absorb pressure and hit Sharks on the break through Shentembo and Mabeya, who were devastating in the first leg.
The key battle will be in midfield. Omotto’s experience against Mombasa’s energetic pressing will determine who controls tempo. At Ulinzi Complex, a military facility with a relatively narrow pitch and an good turf that suits quick passing, Sharks will feel at home.
Expect nerves, drama, and a capacity crowd. Mombasa United are expected to travel with more than 500 fans from the Coast, while Sharks will mobilise their fans from Kariobangi and other areas of Nairobi’s Eastlands region for the match.
Will Kariobangi Sharks swim again in the Premier League, or will the tide from Mombasa sweep them away?
