AFC Leopards’ paper-thin title hopes melted on the penultimate day of the 2025/26 Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKF-PL) season under Kericho’s scorching heat.
The 12-time Kenyan top flight champions ended the day as they started it – second with 64 points and four points behind champions-elect Gor Mahia.

Gor Mahia returned to Nairobi as league champions after a weekend of sightseeing in Homa Bay, where they were scheduled to play Mara Sugar at the Raila Odinga Stadium on Sunday before a Sports Disputes Tribunal ruling issued late on Friday suspended the fixture. Gor have now won a record-extending 22nd league title.
The revival story of the 18-team 2025/26 FKF Premier League ended the scripting of this season’s nail-biting title race.
Popping champagne bottle
APS Bomet, who are 17th with 19 points from 23 matches at the start of March, extended their unbeaten run to 10 matches after a brace by their captain and number seven Philip Wasai against Ingwe helped the home team secure a seventh consecutive league win.
Now placed 10th with 43 points, APS Bomet can end the season as high as sixth.
After a goalless first half, Wasai struck in the 59th and 62nd minutes for APS Bomet against AFC Leopards to transform Gor Mahia from “league leaders” to “champions as it stands”.

An 88th-minute own goal by APS Bomet’s Ugandan defender Edward Masembe – the first that APS Bomet was conceding in 851 minutes – heralded drama that consumed the fixture’s first leg meeting in January, during which AFC Leopards snatched a 2-1 win with two injury-time goals after APS Bomet had taken the lead in 84th minute.
However, lightning did not strike again and the fulltime whistle declared Gor Mahia the finest team the sun shone on during the 2025/26 FKF Premier League season.
That fulltime whistle was welcomed in Homa Bay with Gor Mahia players forming a guard of honour to fete their coach, the Ghanaian Charles Akonnor, who ran between the two files of jubilant players popping a champagne bottle.
In the day’s other matches, Bandari won 1-0 at home to Tusker. Shabana drew 1-1 away to the already-relegated Sofapaka. Murang’a Seal won 2-0 away to Bidco United, who were relegated to the National Super League last weekend.
