The Mombasa County Football Kenya Federation (FKF) elections scheduled for Saturday were halted on Thursday by the Sports Dispute Tribunal (SDT) following a case brought forward by former chairman Salim Ali Said, who had been excluded from the list of contestants released by the FKF Electoral Board.
Salim argued that barring him from the race infringed on his rights ahead of this weekend's elections taking place across 48 branches.
"The Honourable Tribunal be pleased to stay the implementation of the final list of candidates dated 2nd November 2024 for FKF Mombasa County pending the Hearing and determination of this Application," stated SDT chairman John Ohaga in his ruling, stopping the electoral board from holding elections in Mombasa County.
Additionally, Ohaga ordered, "The Honourable Tribunal be pleased to issue injunctive orders restraining the Respondents, its agents, servants or any person acting on their authority from conducting the Elections for Mombasa County scheduled for 9th of November 2024 and 10th November 2024 or as may be Communicated by the Respondents pending Hearing and determination of this Application."
The SDT further directed that the FKF Electoral Board and FKF Appeals Committee, named as respondents in the case, be served with relevant documents by no later than 12:30 PM on Thursday.
Apart from Salim Ali, other candidates who were barred from contesting for county chairman positions included Eliakim Mbaliwa (Nakuru), Bwanamku Fumo (Lamu), Isaac Munene (Trans Nzoia), Patrick Kamora (Tana River), Zablon Mwanyumba (Taita Taveta), Kefa Onditi (Nakuru), Abdisalam Ahmed (Mandera), and Daudi Ali (Wajir).
The list of candidates for the county elections had been released by the Electoral Board on Tuesday.
