Humphrey Aroko’s status as one of Kenya’s brightest football prospects was well illustrated when he was named the Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKF-PL) Player of the Month for February.

The 18-year-old Kariobangi Sharks midfielder received the award, dubbed the SportPesa League Player for the Month for sponsorship reasons, at the Kenya Utalii College Sports Ground in Nairobi on Wednesday.

The honours came with a personalised trophy and a cash prize of Sh50,000.

The former Highway Secondary School player beat Gor Mahia’s midfielder Enock Morrison, Murang’a Seal’s captain and the league’s top scorer Joseph Waithira and Shabana’s goalkeeper Stephen Ochieng’ to the gong.

Both the FKF-PL Player and Coach of the Month are determined through an online public vote.

Amidst Sharks’ struggles in the FKF-PL this season, Aroko has impressed with his performance.

Sharks, under coach William Muluya, are placed 14th on the log with 25 points.

They have managed just five wins, 10 draws and an equal number of losses to hover dangerously near the relegation zone.

Sharks are followed by Ulinzi Stars, Bidco United, APS Bomet and Sofapaka, who have accumulated 22, 22, 21 and 15 points respectively.

Aroko lies third on the scorers chart with eight goals.

Waithira leads the chart with 15 goals followed by Ulinzi’s Paul Odhiambo on 10 goals.

Aroko was a standout player for Sharks in February when the Nairobi-based club went the whole month unbeaten.

He was directly involved in Sharks’ four goals, netting twice and providing two assists.

That performance lifted Sharks out of the relegation zone.

“I’m very happy and grateful to receive this award. It means a lot for me personally, especially at this stage of my career,” said the Kenya U-20 international, who became the youngest player to clinch the FKF-PL Player of the Month this season.

The midfielder scored Sharks goal in their hard-fought 1- 0 win over Ulinzi Stars on February 1 before netting in their 1-1 draw against KCB on February 15.

In their third match of the month against Mathare United on February 21, Aroko set up Luke Otiala to ensure a 1-1 result.

He capped his impressive February performance with an assist to Ally Salum in Sharks’ 1-0 win over APS Bomet on February 26.

“We are not yet where we want to be in the league. I’ll be even happier when we move further up the table,” he said.

“There is still a lot of room for improvement for me individually and for the team,” added the rising midfielder who is targeting to score at least 15 goals this season. Sharks chairman Robert Maoga confessed they had received inquiries about their young gel but were not interested in selling him.

“I am having a problem with Aroko because every club wants him but he is not complete. The boy is working hard but we don’t think he is where he should be to command a sizable amount for him and the club,” Maoga told Nation Sport last week.

After scoring a C+ of 48 points in the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education, Aroko told Nation Sport last year that he would defer further studies to focus on football.

He went for trials at Swedish sides AIK in January and Ostersif in October last year.

Aroko joined Sharks Youth Academy at 11 years in 2018 before being promoted to the senior team in 2022.

He made his Under-18 Junior Stars debut in 2023 during the Cecafa Championship where Kenya lost 2-1 to Uganda in the final.
