What you need to know:

  • Even without their coach Jackline Juma, FC Talanta imposed themselves in the match and outmuscled Gor Mahia players in one-on-one situations.
  • It was not immediately clear why Juma, who is the only female coach in the league, missed the match.

Talanta FC took full advantage of problems bedeviling Gor Mahia’s technical bench, beating the 21-time Kenyan champions 1-0 in a Football Kenya Federation Premier League match at Dandora Stadium in Nairobi Thursday.

Talanta FC scored the winner via Emmanuel Osoro in the first half, the striker latching onto a long range shot by his teammate Cliff Oruko inside the box.

Even without their coach Jackline Juma, FC Talanta imposed themselves in the match and outmuscled Gor Mahia players in one-on-one situations. It was not immediately clear why Juma, who is the only female coach in the league, missed the match.

In the 80th minute of the match, Gor Mahia had a chance to get the equaliser but Austin Odhiambo’s free kick hit the cross bar.

Gor Mahia’s coach , Croatian Sinisa Mihic, has openly clashed with his assistant Zedekia ‘Zico’ Otieno and team manager Victor Nyaoro.

Otieno took charge of the match as head coach Mihic is serving a two-match ban after he was red-carded in his team’s 1-0 win against KCB on April 1. He watched the game from the stands.

Otieno was conspicuously missing in the club’s training session on Monday at M-Pesa Academy in Thika, as well as Tuesday’s session at Dandora Stadium.

The players took a break on Wednesday as they were due to be briefed on the verdict of the management regarding infighting at the technical bench.

Gor Mahia’s management met on Wednesday to discuss the matter.

Thursday’s loss was Gor Mahia’s sixth of the season. The squabbles could derail Gor Mahia’s chances of retaining the FKF-PL title. After 27 matches and with seven games to the end of the season, they have garnered 47 points, four behind leaders Tusker.

“Beating champions is not easy but in football any team is beatable. This was our day, we played well and got maximum points, I’m very happy the way we played,” FC Talanta’s assistant coach, Jackson Gatheru, said.

Otieno didn’t take interviews and left the pitch immediately after the match.
