  • In football, Dagoretti Mixed Girls and Highway Secondary School emerged victorious.
  • Soweto Academy and Ruthimitu Secondary School will fly Nairobi’s flag in volleyball.

Familiar faces will represent Nairobi region in the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association Term Two national championships from July 24 to August 2 in Kakamega County.

During Nairobi Region championships that ended on Saturday at Nairobi School, football teams from Dagoretti Mixed Girls and Highway Secondary School qualified to represent Nairobi at the national championships after winning their respective final matches. Both Highway and Dagorreti were at the national championships last year.

On Saturday, Dagoretti defeated Soweto Academy 1-0 in girls’ football final to seal a place at the nationals alongside Highway who saw off Olympic High School 2-0.

Dagoretti’s coach, Joseph Orao, reckons that although his team didn’t perform well at the national games last year, they are returning better prepared this year as they target a semifinal appearance.

“We didn’t play well at the regional games like we did last year when we beat Soweto 9-0. The scoreline was slimmer this year, and that shows we didn’t play well and something is wrong . But we have time to do our homework and play well for the nationals. Last year at the national championships, we didn’t go past the group stage but I believe we will perform much better this time round. Our attacking department was wanting at the regional games, and we will improve for a better performance,” Orao observed.

Soweto Academy and Ruthimitu Secondary School will fly Nairobi’s flag in volleyball at the nationals, having won the girls’ and boys’ titles respectively.

Soweto beat Brown Hill 3-0 (25-6,25-13,25-9) in the final, while Ruthimitu laboured to beat Hospital Hill High School 3-2 and make a return to the national stage for the first time since 2023.

National championships

Soweto’s coach, Wycliffe Wafula, said that despite having new players in his squad , the team intends to go one place better. Nine dependable players in Soweto’s team finished their secondary school studies last year, and Wafula has been rebuilding a team that only has three experienced players.

“The last time we played at the national championships, we finished third and qualified for the East Africa Games .As much as we are not yet there as far as team cohesion is concerned, we know a lot needs to be done but we have the belief that we can perform better if we work hard. We will do this in the remaining two weeks before the games,” said Wafula.

The experienced players Soweto will be relying on are libero Vaati Mang’ondu, opposite Alvin Jepngeting and outside hitter Flavia Maero.

Ruthimitu, led by coach Patrick Nzioki, are returning to the national championships for the first time since 2023.
