Practice did it for me, says Nation Classic @40 winner

Thika Sports Club’s Kim Jackson Njeru recorded his maiden victory at Karen Country Club after waiting for three years.

Njeru, who started playing golf three years ago, clinched the Nation Classic Series @40 overall title at Karen Country Club on Friday after beating home player Ngari Kibiku on countback with an excellent score of 42 points.

“Though I have won small prizes at a number of times Thika Sports Club, this is my first major victory since I started playing golf, and I am very excited winning this historic event away from my home club,’’ said Njeru, a Senior Commercial Manager at Naivas Supermarket.

He attributed his current game improvement to regularly practising.

Ladies title winner

“I have been practising at least every week to try and improve game and handicap. I thank the Nation Media Group for having invited me to be part of the celebrations of the Nation Classic series whose first event was held at the same venue in 1985’’ said Njeru, who fired 21 points in each nine.

While Kibiku finished second in the overall category, another Karen player Karuti Kanyanga was the men winner on 40 points after beating club-mate Mike Njeru on countback.

Mary Nyamemba, also a Karen member, took the ladies title with a score of 41 points, one better than Agnes Wairimu. What a day it was for former Nation Media Group Chairman Wilfred Kiboro.

Besides the colourful send-off party which was held after the golf event and attended by over 500 people, the 81-year-old Kiboro, a keen golfer, carded 32 points to claim the staff prize.

“I am very excited winning the staff prize in this historic event. It’s my sincere hope that the new team at NMG will continue with the Nation golf classic series which has contributed a great deal to the development of golf in the country as well as social activities’’ said Kiboro.

Besides NMG prizes, at stake for the competing players included a brand new Isuzu Eliud Kipchoge Limited Edition which was offered by Safaricom as grand prize for a player holing in one at the par three-fifth hole. no player achieved this feat.

The limited-edition vehicle, was displayed at the event as a symbol of Safaricom’s Green Box campaign’s theme of delighting Kenyans with unexpected gifts and memorable experiences.

Instant rewards

Throughout the tournament, golfers enjoyed a variety of instant rewards and surprises delivered through the Green Box activation concept, further enhancing the festive atmosphere on the course for players throughout the tournament.

The new NMG Chairman Joe Muganda thanked Kiboro for having steered the Nation Classic series over the years, making it one of the most sort after golf tournament in the country. 

The NMG group CEO Geoffrey Odundo said the series will be an event to watch.
