NOC-K gears up for twice-aborted elections
National Olympics Committee of Kenya (NOCK) Secretary General Francis Mutuku addresses the media during the launch of his bid for the Nock presidency at Nairobi Club on March 27, 2025.
The National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOC-K) will finally hold an election on Monday.
NOC-K president Paul Tergat and secretary general Francis Mutruku said in a statement that the decision was reached by the executive committee in a meeting held on Friday, July 18.
This follows crucial rulings by the High Court in Eldoret and the Sports Dispute Tribunal (SDT) in Nairobi, respectively, on Friday.
Justice Reuben Nyakundi ruled that Kenya Triathlon Federation president Joycelene Nyambura and Kenya Handball Federation chairman Francis Paul be allowed to vote during the elections that should be held within 21 days.
Separately, the SDT in Nairobi cleared Lilian Mududa, Nashon Randiek and Nyambura to contest at the elections that aborted twice -- on April 24 and June 19 this year, following court injunctions over disputes on eligibility.
Nyambura, Paul, Kenya Table Tennis Association (KTTA) president Andrew Mudibo and KTTA moved to the Eldoret High Court and later the Bomet High Court to stop the June 19 elections over several issues.
Nyambura and Paul wanted the court to declare them the sole carriers of their federation’s vote over their respective federation’s secretary general.
They had similar cases at the SDT, but they were told to go back to their respective federations and resolve the issues internally.
Mudibo had challenged the SDT ruling that nullified his candidature for secretary general, besides disbanding KTTA.
Incumbent NOC-K secretary Francis Mutuku and vice chairman Shadrack Maluki are vying for the presidency to replace Tergat, whose two terms come to an end.
