Age-cheating claims rock secondary schools Term Two games in Kisumu County

Allegations of age cheating and fielding of ineligible players have marred Kisumu County Secondary School Games. The term two games are taking place at Onjiko High School.
Maseno School, Kisumu Boys High School, Onjiko High School and Agai Mixed Secondary School all reached the football semi-finals scheduled for Saturday, June 20, 2026.
Maseno will face Onjiko in the first semi-final match, while the second penultimate match will feature Agai and Kisumu Boys.
However, the last pool match between Olembo Boys High School and Katolo Secondary School was not played on Friday. This was after Maseno School and Kisumu Boys successfully appealed against Katolo’s earlier victories. Katolo were found guilty of fielding an ineligible player, resulting in forfeiture of points and their elimination from the competition.
While acknowledging that championship rules have to be applied to the letter, Agai’s head coach and principal, Gordon Akoko, warned against misuse of appeals.
“We want a strong team that will represent the county well. The rules of the game must be applied. Appeals are in the constitution, but they must be genuine and help the development of football. Some are used unfairly to eliminate teams,” he said.
He expressed fear over possible match manipulation in the competitions.
In Bomet and Narok counties, there were upsets and dominant performances by powerhouses as the games came to an end.
Longisa Boys High School from Bomet County again demonstrated their dominance in rugby after retaining the 7-a-side title for the 17th time. The champions edged out a resilient Tenwek High School side 17-12 in a thrilling final played at Kapkwen Grounds.
Longisa Boys’ coach, Wesley Yegon, praised his players for showing discipline and determination throughout the tournament, noting that the team remained focused despite strong competition from other schools.
Tenwek High School emerged new champions in boys' basketball after dethroning defending champions Kimulot Boys High School. Tenwek secured a convincing 12-7 victory in the final, ending Kimulot's reign and earning the county title.
“We knew we were facing a strong Kimulot side, but the players executed our game plan well and remained focused until the final whistle," said Boniface Ombima.
Little-known Kuresiet Secondary School stole the show in Narok after they stunned favourites Rongena Secondary School 3-0 to claim the volleyball title at Narok Boys High School grounds. The victory was particularly remarkable because it was Kuresiet's first-ever appearance at the county games. The team produced an impressive campaign, winning all their matches without dropping a single set throughout the tournament. The school's principal, Festus Bett, described the achievement as a "historic milestone for the institution".
In boys' basketball, former champions Narok Boys High School reclaimed the county title in emphatic fashion after defeating Talek Boys 14-2 in the final. Coach Geoffrey Chumba lauded his players for their commitment and teamwork, saying the victory reflected months of dedicated preparation.
At Iranya Grounds in Kitutu Masaba Constituency in Nyamira County, Matutu PAG Secondary School’s three-year dominance of boys’ football ended after they were eliminated at the county championships. The “Forest Commandos”, who had ruled since 2022 and represented the county at the Nyanza Region games for three consecutive years, were knocked out 3-2 on penalties by St Paul’s Gekano High School in the semi-finals. The match ended 0-0 in regular time before Gekano converted three spot-kicks against Matutu’s two to seal the upset and end the champions’ reign.
In Kakamega County, Kakamega High School, nicknamed ‘Green Commandos’, reached the semi-finals of boys’ football after a 4-0 win over Mukumu Boys.
In Migori County, Koderobara Secondary advanced to the semi-finals after a 1-0 win over Masara, while St Joseph’s Rapogi also progressed after beating Ikerege 2-0.
Meanwhile, in Siaya County, boys’ football defending champions St Mary’s Yala have been drawn in Pool A alongside Nyagondo, Ndenga, and former East Africa champions Barding.
The former national champions will be aiming to retain their county title and extend their dominance in the sport as the competition gets underway on Saturday.
In Nairobi West Sub-region games, Nairobi School defeated Raila Education Centre 2-1 in a group C match in football. In the girls’ contest, Soweto Academy thumped Karen Girls Senior School 3-0. However, Karen bounced back with a 2-1 win over New Dawn Education Center.
