Kenyan darts player Peter Wachiuri is celebrating a major breakthrough after signing a three-year endorsement deal with Winmau, the world’s largest manufacturer of premium bristle dartboards and tungsten darts.

The sponsorship comes just ahead of his highly anticipated debut at the Modus Super Series in the United Kingdom.

Wachiuri, who competes under the Buffaloes Franchise in the African Darts Series League, received four pairs of professional darts and a dartboard as part of the deal. Despite the support, he has called on well-wishers to assist in funding his travel and participation in the prestigious tournament.

“It is my first time getting such huge support. This equipment is not cheap, so I’m so happy. I can’t wait to intensify my training in readiness for the tournament. I’m optimistic about doing well in Portsmouth,” Wachiuri told Nation Sport yesterday, attributing his rise to discipline and hard work.

Sirua Darts Group, a leading darts events marketing company in East Africa, confirmed that Wachiuri will represent East and North Africa in the Modus Super Series, set for February 24-26 in Portsmouth, UK.

His invitation follows an impressive performance at the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) World Championship Qualifiers for Africa, held in Nairobi on September 29, 2024.

Wachiuri’s electrifying face-off against South African Cameron Carolissen captivated fans, sparking an online frenzy in Kenya and beyond.

The driver-turned-darts-star was later voted second runners-up in the global Darts Fans Player of the Year poll, finishing behind Rashad Seeting (Bahamas) and Stephen Bunting (UK).

He will become the first Kenyan to compete in the global event and putting the country firmly on the global darts map.

“This remarkable achievement earned Wachiuri international admiration, and his participation is not just a personal triumph but a monumental moment for Kenyan sports. It opens doors for future talent and elevates the profile of darts in the region,” noted Buffalo Darts Group Secretary General Daniel Karori.

While the endorsement from Winmau is a game-changer, Wachiuri still requires financial and logistical support to make the trip to the UK.

“The journey to the UK requires significant support. Buffalo Franchise is calling on Kenyans, corporates, brands, and the government to rally behind Peter and ensure he represents Kenya on this global stage,” said Karori.

“Wachiuri is more than just a darts player—he is a symbol of hope and a trailblazer for the sport in Kenya,” added Jefferson Muriithi, a Buffalo Franchise representative.

“His journey to the Modus Super Series is a testament to the immense talent we have in this country. Together, we can support him and pave the way for the future of darts in Kenya.”

The event unveiling Wachiuri was attended by Kenya Darts Association chairman Wilson Githae, Buffalo Franchise vice chairman Manpreet Kalsi, and darts legend Gichia Kubai, who has played the sport for over 40 years.

Winmau, represented by Darren McMahon, Resident Director of Nodor Darts EPZ, will provide Wachiuri with professional darts equipment and kits throughout the three-year partnership.

“This is the first step in creating lasting partnerships with a major force within darts. Sirua Darts Group is committed to nurturing local talent across all age groups and promoting the growth of darts across East Africa,” Karori stated.

Sirua has also been instrumental in mentoring junior players, ensuring continuity and sustainability in the sport.

“Through its innovative events, Sirua blends the sport with African culture, creating unforgettable experiences that celebrate music, art, and cuisine. Peter’s success is a direct result of such efforts, and we are determined to ensure he receives the support he needs to shine on the global stage,” Karori added.
