Kenya claims silver in parliamentary games

  • Kenya claimed another bronze medal in men's 1,500m throug Titus Lotee (5:33.9) in a race won by Julius Achon of Uganda (5:23.0). On Tuesday, Kenya will be hoping to recover from a 3-0 loss to Uganda on Sunday in football as they take on South Sudan.
  • “We are confident of performing well here. We will do our best in our remaining matches,” said Rarieda MP Otiende Amollo who is Kenya’s captain, said.

Mwala MP Vincent Kawaya won silver medal for Kenya in athletics as the 14th edition of the East African Community Inter-Parliamentary Games entered the third day in Mombasa Monday.

Mr Kawaya won silver in men’s 100 meters, and also played a pivotal role Kenya’s triumph in men’s 4x100m relay at the Mbaraki Sports Club.

Uganda dominated athletics competitions. As the parliamentarians took to the track to compete, they were widely cheered as they braved the morning rain at Mbaraki Stadium in Mombasa. In men’s 4x100m relay, Mr Kawaya was cheered widely by the home fans as he sprinted to the finish line to give Kenya the gold medal in 53.7 seconds.

MPs Josses Lelmengit (Emgwen Constituency), Charles Nguna (Mwingi West) and Bernard Kitur (Nandi Hills) were the other members of Kenya’s  4x100m relay team. 

The East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) team, led by Kanini Kega from Kenya, finished second in 55.2 seconds while Uganda settled for bronze medal in 56.5 seconds.

Earlier,  Mr Kawaya had won silver medal for Kenya in the men’s 100m in 12.2 seconds. Uganda’s Benard Odoi claimed gold in a time 12.0 seconds, while his compatriot Patrick Ochan took bronze in 12.6. 

In the women’s 100m final, Busia County Woman Representative Catherine Omanyo of Kenya won silver medal in 16.1 seconds behind Uganda’ Joan Alobo who won in 15.8 seconds.

Tanzania’s Condesta Sichalwe finished third in 16.5 seconds. Kenya won bronze medal in the women’s 4x100m relay race in  1:20.1. Uganda won gold in 1:08.0, followed by Tanzania in 1:16.0.
