Kabras Sugar defeated Uganda’s Black Pirates in the Enterprise Cup final at RFUEA ground on Saturday to notch up their sixth consecutive title on a day that celebrated rugby in the region.
For the first time since 1999 Ugandan teams were participating in the 96-year-old tournament. And they were not just there to be counted, as Black Pirates became the first side from Uganda to advance to the final since Kampala’s victory in 1970.
Kabras and Black Pirates are now calling for more cross-border rugby matches after a 2026 Enterprise Cup involving eight Kenyan and four Ugandan clubs.
The two finalists want to see the return of the defunct Rugby Super Series that ended in 2024 after making a brief return.
Kabras Sugar head coach Carlos Katywa and his Black Pirates counterpart Marvin Odongo want to see more Test matches between Kenya and Uganda and more meetings between clubs from the two nations.
They also want a regional circuit for the sevens version to help grow the game before the region can realistically think about qualifying for the 15s Rugby World Cup.

“The region can’t talk about qualifying for the World Cup when we rarely play each other here first. We need more matches between clubs and national teams across the two versions of the game,” said Katywa. He said he wanted to replicate Kabras’s dominance in the 15s to the sevens.
Odongo said he was happy that Kenya Rugby Union and their Ugandan counterparts organised the Enterprise Cup as a regional tournament as it was originally envisaged.
“I hope Tanzanian sides will be added as well. We have played three Kenyan teams and learned a lot from them,” said Odongo.
“Charity should start at home, by gauging our standards and see where we are before we can dream about making it to the World Cup,” said Odongo.
Pirates came so close to repeating what Kampala City achieved over half a century ago.
“We were testing the waters and we now know where to improve. Our decision making wasn’t good. I believe we shall take on Kabras properly next time,” said Odongo.
Katywa said that they have established a winning culture at Kabras Sugar, which has seen them win the Kenya Cup and Enterprise Cup six times each.
“We now want to shift our 15s dominance to the sevens version of the game,” said Katywa. “We are not letting anything get out of Kakamega, be it the Kenya Cup or Enterprise Cup, and that momentum will be replicated in the sevens.”

Kabras Sugar have won the Kenya National Sevens Circuit once, in 2017.
Skipper Eugene Sifuna, who was named Man-of-the-Match in the final, said their resilience drove them to victory on Saturday, three weeks after sealing their sixth Kenya Cup title and fifth in a row.
"The two trophies are at Kakamega to stay because we have structures that will keep on churning out quality players," said Sifuna.
Kabras Sugar are undefeated in the Enterprise Cup since 2019 when they won the tournament.
