Kenya Sevens are one step away from winning their first Cup final in World Rugby Sevens Series since 2016 after cruising to the final of Singapore Sevens on Sunday with a 12-5 victory over Spain in the semi-finals of Singapore Sevens.

Kenya Sevens, christened 'Shujaa', will renew rivalry with former Olympics, World Cup and World Sevens Series champions Fiji in the final of Singapore Sevens from 2.41pm (Kenyan time).

Fijian-born Kenyan Jone Kubu will line up against his country of birth in the match.

Singapore Sevens is the sixth leg of the 2025-2026 World Rugby Sevens Series.

Shujaa, coached by Kevin Wambua, will however need to win the play-offs in Los Angeles, USA in May to remain a core team in the Sevens Series next season.

Shujaa have had a season to forget, and are sure to finish the 2025-2026 season among the bottom four teams in  the 12-team league.

On Sunday, Shujaa defeated Spain 12-5 with two tries from speedster Patrick Odongo which were converted by Nygel Amaitsa.

Spain’s consolation try came late in the match from Pol Pla.

It was the second time in two weekends that Shujaa inflicted pain on Spain, after whipping them 19-0 at Hong Kong Sevens

En route to the 2025 Singapore Sevens final, Shujaa, who stunned Fiji 30-7 in the Singapore Sevens final in 2016, thrashed Ireland 17-7 with tries from Amaitsa, Kevin Wekesa, and Odongo, and Olympic champions France 10-7 with tries from Vincent Onyala and Amaitsa in Pool “B”.

Fiji, who have won the World Series four times, World Cup three times, and Olympics two times, shocked Argentina 33-24 in the second cup semi-final.

The Fijians have defeated Kenya in 14 consecutive matches, so the former African champions will have to be at their best to taste victory.
