  • Olendo and Ndale dismissed the allegations as a witch hunt, accusing KRU Chairman Sasha Mutai of sponsoring the motion.

Mwamba Rugby Club has backtracked on its motion seeking the removal of four Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) board members during the upcoming Annual General Meeting (AGM) on March 24.

Mwamba had initially filed motions to remove influential Secretary General Ray Olendo, Vice Chairman Moses Ndale, Treasurer Joshua Aroni, and Director John Kilonzo over various allegations.

Mwamba Chairman Jason Rosario Braganza explained that the motion was submitted due to unresolved issues, but was later withdrawn after further consultations within the rugby fraternity.

“We felt more scrutiny was needed on matters at hand after further consultation with a wider rugby fraternity,” Braganza said.

Braganza further noted that the decision was influenced by the Kenya Cup Caucus, which had also written to the KRU board demanding a response to the raised issues within four days.

“For that to happen, we decided to withdraw the motion and support the initiative and coordination by the Kenya Cup Caucus,” he stated. “We needed fine answers, hence the move to step back, breathe, and seek alternative resolutions in the best interest of rugby.”

Mwamba had accused Olendo of presenting a forged Credit Reference Bureau document ahead of the March 2023 elections.

He was suspended by the KRU board on August 4, 2023, but later won a legal battle at the Sports Disputes Tribunal (SDT) on March 5, 2024. The tribunal ruled his suspension illegal and stated that data privacy breaches were beyond its jurisdiction.

Additionally, Mwamba argued that both Aroni and Kilonzo had overstayed in office, violating the Sports Act 2013.

Aroni, elected treasurer in March 2016 and re-elected in 2018 and 2023, has served three terms totaling nine years. Kilonzo, first elected as a director in 2016 and re-elected in 2019 and 2023, has served for eight years.

Mwamba also sought Ndale’s removal over integrity concerns, stating he did not align with the vision and aspirations of Kenya Rugby.

Olendo and Ndale dismissed the allegations as a witch hunt, accusing KRU Chairman Sasha Mutai of sponsoring the motion.
