Nairobi Sevens: Kenya Shujaa wind up third behind Germany and USA

Kenya Sevens made it four wins out of five matches to finish third overall in the opening leg of the World Rugby Sevens Division II series at Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday.

In the Kenyan leg of the World Rugby Sevens Division II dubbed “Nairobi Sevens, Kenya Shujaa lost to the United States of America 21-5 in their last match of the six-team tournament, but it is Germany who led the standings after two days of action in Nairobi with 13 points.

USA’s Eagles and Shujaa finished with 12 points each in a tournament that proved competitive with every point counting.

Germany,  USA and Kenya lost one match each in the tournament.

Kenya had earlier in the day beaten Uruguay 17-7, with Chrisant Ojwang, George Ooro, and Samuel Asati landing a try each as Nygel Amaitsa managed one conversion.

There was no reprieve for Kenya Lionesses, who lost to Argentina 5-0 and Spain 14-5 to finish fifth overall in the women’s competition. Kenya Lionesses finished the tournament with six points from one win and four losses.

Argentina (13 points) and South Africa (12) finished on top of the women’s competition after losing a match each in Nairobi.

Argentina finished at the top of the women’s standings with 13 points despite losing to African champions South Africa 17-12 in their final match of Nairobi Sevens.

Following the conclusion of Nairobi Sevens, the series heads to South America for back-to-back championship.  Uruguay will stage the second leg in Montevideo from March 21 to 22, then teams head to Sao Paulo in Brazil for the final leg from March 28 to 29.

The top four teams after the three-leg men's and women’s championships will join the eight teams from the World Rugby Sevens Division I in the World Championship, which will feature three events.

There are competitions in Hong Kong (April 17-19), in Valladolid, Spain (May 29-31), and in Bordeaux, France (June 5-7).

Eventual winners will be crowned world champions, and the bottom four teams will be relegated to the Division II category. The top four will compete in the 2026/2027 World Rugby Division I Series.
