St Anthony’s, Tigoi Girls sweep aside rivals at secondary schools games

St Anthony’s Boys High School Kitale and Tigoi Girls High School on Monday remained on course to winning hockey titles as the 22nd edition of the Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSSA) Games entered the fifth day in Kakamega.
In the girls’ category, Kenyan champions Tigoi Girls thumped Uganda’s Namagunga 13-0 in a one-sided encounter at Mukumu Girls grounds. Tigoi were dominant from start to finish, scoring three goals in the opening quarter, and running riot in the second half.
Beatrice Okode led the onslaught with a hat-trick while Chelegat Gift and Phyllis Akinyi added two goals each. Other scorers included Judith Oloo, Esther Chepchirchir, and Annaliese Rubi as the Kenyan side sealed one of the biggest wins of the tournament so far.
Tigoi coach Moses Erima said they are not relenting in their hunt for the regional.
Dominant performance
“We have improved with each game and this being a round-robin contest there is no room for error. Consistency will be very key in winning gold,” Erima said yesterday.
In another closely contested girls’ match, Kakungulu from Uganda fell 1-0 to Ng’iya Girls. The Kenyan side struck early in the fourth minute through a field goal and held on despite late pressure from Kakungulu. Nelly Temuag earned a yellow card in the 56th minute for Kakungulu, but Ng’iya's solid defending ensured they collected maximum points.
The boys’ competition also saw a dominant Kenyan performance as Musingu High School humbled Uganda’s Mbarara 4-1.
Musingu’s Brian Musee and Peter Kamau ran the show, with goals from Chadrack Ouma, Victor Karanja, and Elvis Shigunzi sealing victory.
Mbarara managed a consolation through Benjamin Amwine in the 54th minute, but it was too little too late against the organised defending champions
Former winners St Anthony's also underlined their intentions of reclaiming the title as they saw off Uganda’s Ntare School 2-0 courtesy of goals from Duncan Kiptanui and Isaac Okoth.
St Anthony's coach, Kelvin Lugalia, heaped praises on his team for maintaining the momentum.
“We are hungry to win back the title and every good performance we put up is a step closer to that target. The competition is stiff but we are up to it and hope that we shall smile come Friday, “ Lugalia said.
Unbeaten run
In girls’ volleyball champions Kesogon Mixed Secondary School led compatriots Kwanthanze Secondary School and Bishop Sulumeti Secondary School in sealing their slots in the semi finals
Kesogon Girls Secondary dismissed compatriots Bishop Sulumeti 3-1 to stay on course to keeping their title.
Kesogon we're off to a bright start, taking the first set 25-16. Sulumeti, buoyed by the home crowd, rallied to snatch the second set 25-23.
However, the champions quickly regained control, cruising through the third and fourth sets 25-11 and 25-16 to maintain their unbeaten run.
Record winners Kwanthanze, who had dominated the region since 2017 before losing the crown to Kesogon last year, reminded their rivals of their pedigree by thrashing Uganda’s Amus College in straight sets of 25-9, 25-14, and 25-10.
