Familiar opponents will face off in Kenya Secondary School Sports Association (KSSSA) Term Two national games finals as the week-long event ends today in Kakamega.
The overall winners will take the bragging rights, but the semifinalists in all the disciplines will qualify to represent host nation Kenya in East Africa championships scheduled for August 14 - 24 in Kakamega County.
In boys’ football final planned for Mumias Sports Complex, Western region’s champions Musingu High will play St Joseph’s Kitale Boys High School from Rift valley at the same venue.
Musingu twice came from one goal down to defeat Nairobi region and reigning national champions Highway Secondary School 3-2 in the first semi-final match, while St Joseph’s beat newcomers Agai Secondary School from Nyanza 3-0 in the second semifinal match played at the same venue.
Highway scored through Rial Beliew and P. Otongolo, as fan favourite Marvin Ashihundu, and Kevin Mukaramoja scored for Musingu. Highway defender Bevern Ayaga scored an own goal. Agai will play Highway in the third-place play-offs.
Agai coach Gordon Akoko said playing at nationals was in itself was a plus considering they were new at that stage.
“We can only get better in the forthcoming editions. We have announced our arrival at this stage, and we intend to be here going forward. We hope to play well against Highway, and to ruffle few feathers in East Africa Games,” said Akoko.
In girls’ football final, national champions Butere Girls will square it out with fellow Western region team Madira Secondary School at Mumias Sports Complex. Butere walloped Kobala Secondary from Nyanza region 3-0 with goals from Diana Anyango, Medrine Truphena, and Celestine Aludo to reach the final, while Madira saw off Nasokol from Rift valley 2-1. Kobalo will play Nasokol in the third place played-off.
Butere’s coach, Howard Shikanga hopes to win the match, which is a repeat of Western region final in which his team won 1-0.
“It’s a match that could go either way but we are ready for them. At the regional level, we were in the same pool, and they beat us in the opening match 1-0 but we returned the favor in the final and defeated them 1-0. We will be out to defend the title but it will be a tough call,” said Shikanga.
