Takaba Mixed Day Senior School from North Eastern Region on Monday delivered the region’s first ever victory in football in Kenya Secondary School Sports Association (KSSSA) Term Two national games at M-Pesa Foundation Academy in Thika, Kiambu County.
At the same time, Kakamega High School from Western region reached the semi-finals after a 4-0 win over Tumaini from Eastern.
Takaba thrashed Baricho High School from the Central Region 6-1 in a one-sided Group ‘B’ match in boys’ football, marking a major milestone not only for the school but also for North Eastern region.
Since the inception of the games, no school from the North Eastern Region had ever won a match at the nationals in any discipline.

Even more remarkable was the fact that Takaba Mixed Day Senior School had never progressed beyond the sub-county level before beginning its historic journey this season to national arena.
Yahyah Majid opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, followed by goals from Abdi Majid in the 51st and 60th minutes, Ismail Edin (63rd), and Ali Noor (83rd). Captain Abdi Karim Alow, popularly known as “Aminkey,” completed the rout in the 86th minute.
St Philip Baricho High scored the consolation through Alex Jomba in the 90th minute. Takaba’s head coach, Noah Thuranira Ngeera, attributed their historic victory to patience and commitment, noting that it took him three years to rebuild the team into national title contenders.
“I thank the players for believing in the process and for executing our game plan. I also sincerely appreciate our Senior Principal for the immense support he has given the team throughout our journey,” said Ngeera.
Captain Abdi Karim Alow said the players were more confident after the historic win and promised to fight for more victories.
Greatest achievement
“We now believe in ourselves. We thank our principal for standing with us and motivating us throughout the competition,” Karim said.
Takaba’s Senior Principal Abdikhalif Hassan Ibrahim described the victory as the greatest achievement in the school’s sporting history. Tabaka remain in contention a place in the semi-finals from the pool. Tomorrow, they will face Tumaini Secondary School from Eastern region.
Meanwhile, Kakamega High School, fondly known as ‘Green Commandos’ progressed to the semi-finals following a 4-0 route over Tumaini on Monday.
In the match, which attracted hundreds of supporters, Mclin Adika, Daniel Ombati, Julius Ochieng and Bradley Muliamba scored a goal apiece for Kakamega, who are multiple national champions, with their last triumph coming in 2018. Kakamega made a bright start to their campaign on Sunday, thumping Takaba 3-0.
“We know we deserved it and we are very proud. We are aware of why we are here; our aim is to handle each game at a time. Our game plan remains the same, to win the title," said Kakamega captain Fidel Odhiambo.

Tumaini thrashed St Philip’s 6-1 on Sunday, before Tabaka recorded an identical 6-1 victory over St Philip’s on Monday.
In girls’ rugby sevens, Rift Valley champions Itigo Girls High School won 26-0 against Sigoti Girls. St Joseph’s Girls hammered Mwatate 36-0.
In girls’ volleyball, national and East Africa champions Kwanthanze from Eastern recovered from a 1-3 loss to Mwitoti from Western to beat Kahuro from Central 3-0 (25-13, 25-16 and 25-16).
In another match, last year’s runners ups Kesegon Mixed from Rift-Valley region extended their win after beating Soweto from Nairobi 3-0 (25-12, 25-19 and 25-19).
In boys category, Chesamisi from Western region beat Moi Force Academy of Nairobi 3-0 (25-13, 25-10 and 25-11). Matiliku from Eastern beat Rithimitu from Central 3-0 (25-22, 25-23 and 25-21).
In girls football, St Joseph’s Girls recovered from loss 0-2 to Nyakach Girls by beating Kiaritha 14-0.
