Remember 2022, when she said she has everything except shame? Recall her past revelation that she was suspended from Limuru Girls while sitting the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education exams?
She is a woman who has made several strides in life including getting a law degree from the University of Nairobi and a subsequent diploma from the Kenya School of Law, obtaining a master’s in international relations, running a law firm, being a director at the Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company, being a nominated lawmaker, being crowned a “nyakinyua” elder, introducing an artificial intelligence Bill in the Senate, among others.
Despite all she has achieved, the side of her that the public knows better is the uncouth, craggy side that shoots from the hip, attracts wrath and which once made her father wish she dropped the “Nyamu” surname.
Her father, an engineer; and mother, a teacher, tried all they could to shape her into a proper Kenyan.
“My parents were very strict, especially my dad,” she told musician King Kaka in a September 2025 interview where she also added that she grew up in church but often got into trouble due to her curious mind.
“My dad used to beat me. But I am grateful for that. Kama angelegea tu kidogo, sijui (I don’t know what I could have become if he slackened just a bit),” she added.
It was her conduct regarding her relationship with musician Samuel “Samidoh” Muchoki that got her father miffed.
“My furious father told me to drop his name, Nyamu, from my name as I was embarrassing him with the social media posts,” she told Nation in 2021.
She has been in the news again, this time because she made a remark on March 25 concerning a Grade 10 schoolgirl – where she asked for clarity on what “service” she was there to offer – which bordered on sexual objectification.
“She made utterances that were disrespectful, inappropriate and fell short of the standards of decorum and respect expected of members of this house. The utterances made brought embarrassment to the student, the student’s family and the public,” Senate Speaker Amason Kingi said in a Thursday ruling.
While tendering her apology over the remarks, Ms Nyamu noted: “I acknowledge that the utterances were inappropriate and fell short of the dignity, decorum, and respect expected of a state officer, particularly towards a young female learner.”
She, however, went off-script when she sought to explain herself by saying she was highly misunderstood.
“Just leave it at that,” temporary speaker Veronica Maina stated as she cut short Ms Nyamu.
When she posted on Facebook later on Thursday, Ms Nyamu took a sarcastic tone: “Lucky you, perfect people, who never make mistakes or never get misunderstood. I look forward to being just like you. For now, I’m still imperfect, still misunderstood, still trying.”
Last month, Ms Nyamu was crowned a Kikuyu elder, laying claim to the title of the patron of the Nairobi Chapter of the Mumbi Nyakinyua Nathengira. Days later, she told the Senate that it was a major elevation.
“The coronation, which is conducted according to the traditions of the Agikuyu community, was a great honour for me. It recognises my role as a woman leader and a custodian of our people’s values,” she said.
“A Nyakinyua is a respected woman in the Agikuyu community, chosen after careful consideration of her character, her family life, and her ability to guide others. She is a peacemaker and a source of wisdom, helping to resolve conflicts and protect the community,” she added.
Seen dancing to the “Siaka” song by Mejja just days ago, shaking her bosom and all, and given her utterances, the jury is out whether the “nyakinyua” crown she controversially received (some elders said she is too young for it) is properly resting on her head.
Raised in Umoja, Ms Nyamu’s controversies can be enough to fill a 33-seater bus plying the Eastlands route where she spent her formative years. She has been kicked out of the Senate for improper dressing, drawn criticism for taking a puff in public, posted videos of her dancing suggestively, got into trouble with a hotel for not clearing a bill, among others.
In 2024, amid the difficult conversations about taxation and the opulence of leaders, Ms Nyamu added fuel to fire when she declared on social media that she uses tampons. This was amid a conversation about increasing taxes on sanitary pads.
This made President William Ruto include her in a lengthy session he had with enraged Kenyan youth during an X space.
“Sometimes I call in some of those people and I give them a piece of my mind,” said Dr Ruto. “Even Nyamu, I have had occasion to sit her down and tell her she needs to change what she is doing.”
Ms Nyamu said last year that it was Dr Ruto who saw to it that she was appointed to a government role after she came third in the 2017 nominations for the Nairobi Woman Representative seat. Politics, she added, is a profession she enjoys. She shot into the limelight after a city trader was shot dead in his car and soon gained a foothold in the political arena.
“I’ve never regretted [politics]. I’m so deep in it. I think I’m living my passion,” she said at the King Kaka interview.
As she pursues her political ambitions, the noise around her mannerisms will keep defining her. As she told Nation in 2021: “Controversy always follows me.”
