The sight of young Kenyans arrested or killed during police operations has become disturbingly familiar. Each incident ignites outrage and fear, yet it often obscures a deeper question: why are so many of our youth drawn into violent criminal gangs, and why does our response remain largely reactive?
Gang activity is not unique to Kenya. What should alarm us, however, is the scale, organisation and brutality of youth-led gangs in Nairobi, Mombasa and other urban centres. These groups are increasingly coordinated and heavily armed.
A joint study by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and the World Bank shows that poverty and unemployment alone do not cause youth crime.
They become dangerous only when combined with inequality, exclusion, lack of opportunity, easy access to drugs and firearms, and weak education and justice systems.
Unsurprisingly, youth violence has become primarily an urban phenomenon, closely linked to rapid urbanisation without adequate social infrastructure. Gangs thrive where society is weakest, where families are strained, schools under-resourced, communities disengaged and institutions distrusted.
Expecting the police alone to resolve this crisis is unrealistic and unfair. Crime is a social problem that demands a whole-of-society response. Community cooperation with police is essential.
Initiatives such as community policing and Nyumba Kumi must be strengthened. Too often, communities ignore the slow emergence of gangs until violence overwhelms them. The Coast and Central regions offer a sobering lesson.
Faith institutions like churches, mosques and temples also carry a responsibility. Gangs exploit a deep human longing for belonging, dignity and purpose.
When society fails to meet these needs, gangs step in, offering identity, power and a distorted sense of pride. Reaching troubled youth in ways that resonate with their lived realities is no longer optional.
Parents, teachers and counsellors play an equally critical role. Adolescents crave identity and recognition. Without guidance and psychosocial support, many find these in gangs.
The mainstream media must also reflect on their role. Sensational coverage amplifies the mystique of gangs while downplaying law enforcement successes and community resilience. Responsible reporting can demystify gangs and reinforce the message that crime ultimately destroys lives and futures.
Government action must evolve. Intelligence-led policing, proactive crime prevention and continuous research are essential.
Equally important are youth economic empowerment, civic education, recreational facilities and better coordination among security agencies.
Ultimately, when we create opportunities for self-determination instead of producing angry, alienated young men, gangs lose their appeal. Violence subsides. Communities heal.
