Alcoholism: The scourge destroying homes and lives

Bad alcohol • ‘Nation’ has rightly highlighted the scourge of alcoholism and its effects, including broken homes, joblessness and neglect of family responsibilities, says Alnashir D Walji. “Smoking, too, remains a health hazard. Parents must provide proper guidance, including monitoring what children watch on television. A morally upright society is the backbone of a developing nation.”

True change • Progress, according to our governors, city planners, technocrats and others, means shiny tall buildings or vertical slums and multiple single-person vehicles on the roads, says James Enyukor. “But progress is smart cities with green spaces, mass transit, integrated urban gardens, well-paying skilled jobs, trash recycling, smart policing and top-notch social services such as water provision.”
