Bad alcohol • ‘Nation’ has rightly highlighted the scourge of alcoholism and its effects, including broken homes, joblessness and neglect of family responsibilities, says Alnashir D Walji. “Smoking, too, remains a health hazard. Parents must provide proper guidance, including monitoring what children watch on television. A morally upright society is the backbone of a developing nation.”
Melting glaciers • Global warming leading to the melting of glaciers on the Himalayas may have contributed to the flooding and deaths in Nepal, says university don XN Iraki. “Are the glaciers on Mt. Silly season • As Kenya’s politicians warm up for the 2027 General Election, substance is predictably being replaced by insults, notes Yabesh Onwonga. “Kenyans do not need another election built on character assassination, tribal provocation and manufactured outrage. True change • Progress, according to our governors, city planners, technocrats and others, means shiny tall buildings or vertical slums and multiple single-person vehicles on the roads, says James Enyukor. “But progress is smart cities with green spaces, mass transit, integrated urban gardens, well-paying skilled jobs, trash recycling, smart policing and top-notch social services such as water provision.”
