Drought: Long-term solutions needed to curb hunger, famine
Lokai Ekeno, 35, walks her children past a bare, deserted trading centre following a prolonged drought spell in Loperot village in Turkana County, February 16.
Ending drought • The raging drought in the northern counties is pushing vulnerable communities deeper into hunger, starvation and despair, says Isaack Osinyah. “The people of Turkana, Mandera and Wajir are losing livestock as water sources dry up. Children are suffering from malnutrition. Besides food relief, long-term solutions are required.” His contact is [email protected].

In bad taste • The governors’ display of profligacy by flying to Kilifi County for a press conference on why they should snub the Senate and dodge accountability was in bad taste, says W. Kimariech. “The talk about bribes is neither here nor there. If one is clean, why would one entertain extortion? The Council of Governors presides over Petri dishes of financial rot!” His contact is [email protected].

Power woes • Wajir County “is experiencing unprecedented power outages”, says Ahmed Somow Ahmed. “The power station is off-grid and depends on a leased diesel generator that often breaks down, taking months to restore power. This affects households, healthcare, security and education. It’s happening as we start Ramadhan. A permanent solution is needed.” His contact is [email protected].

Good job • Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi is doing a good job, notes Joshua Mwabali. “When he’s not distributing certified seeds to farmers, he will be donating some piglets or opening a new hospital. Other governors should go for benchmarking in Kiambu. All leaders should always strive to make their counties and the country greater, safer and richer.” His contact is [email protected].

Accountability • Kenya, Faith Moraa laments, has increasingly become a den of thieves. “Every day, we are being told of money being stolen, and people just go on with their lives. The Social Health Authority was defrauded of Sh11 billion by hospitals, yet Health CS Aden Duale remains in office. In developed countries, he would have resigned by now.” Her contact is [email protected].
