Keep politics out of the pulpit during worship
Church leaders are to blame for this erosion of the sanctity of the pulpit.
Performance audits • The governors, Lincoln E. Oyigo proposes, should be audited at least every month. “These people are elected to serve wananchi, and not to just amass wealth, as is the case these days. In Mombasa, for example, litter is strewn all over the place, and the sewerage is a total mess. Of what use are these county governments, as the people continue to suffer?” His contact is [email protected].

Sakaja’s mess • Nairobi Governor Sakaja seems to have thrown in the towel in the city centre, ceding power to hawkers, says James Enyukor. “The CBD is congested, filthy, and full of rotten produce discarded right outside stalls. But there are funds to spend on expensive Cabro and London-style streetlights, as if to blatantly insult the intelligence of Nairobians. Things need to change.” His contact is [email protected].

Unending blackouts • Urgently calling Kenya Power is Joseph Mugeri, a disappointed resident of the expansive Mathare North slum area of Nairobi, who says they have had a really rough time with a seemingly never-ending blackout since last November. Says Joseph: “Our numerous calls to the power utility’s emergency section have fallen on deaf ears. Who will come to our rescue?” His contact is [email protected].

Looming disasters • On almost all the matatus and buses in Nairobi, the emergency doors are either sealed with metal bars or are just never opened, says John Ochogo. “Also missing is the inscription, ‘Emergency door’. This poses a grave danger in case an accident occurs, as there is no escape route. Can the NTSA and traffic police ensure that these doors are operational?” His contact is [email protected].

Auctioned churches • There is a troubling trend in which churches are being turned into political arenas during worship, says Allan Kinyua Murianki. “The politicians come bearing gifts and are then allowed to greet the congregation, blurring the line between worship and a campaign rally. Indeed, the church leaders themselves are to blame for this erosion of the sanctity of the pulpit.” His contact is [email protected].
Have a sacred day, won’t you!
