What you need to know:

  • Nairobi City County government should consider closing filthy kiosks and clearing heaps of uncollected garbage to make the city more habitable.
  • Busia Governor Paul Otuoma’s impressive start to his first five-year tenure after his election in 2022 is fading away over alleged corrupt dealings.

Civic education • Voter registration is dismal, especially among youth, says Wambui Njiru. “Ironically, many of them demand change but fail to take the first step — registering to vote. The IEBC should intensify civic education and use social media to reach more young people. Voting is both a right and a responsibility, and change begins with registration.” Her contact is [email protected].

City face • The Nairobi City County government, Diana D’souza notes, has issued an ultimatum to property owners to repaint their buildings as the capital is the face of the country, which is okay. However, she poses: “How about closing the filthy kiosks and clearing the heaps of uncollected garbage to make the city more habitable for the ordinary residents?” Her email address is [email protected].

Failed leadership • Busia Governor Paul Otuoma’s impressive start to his first five-year tenure after his election in 2022 is fading away over corrupt dealings involving hefty suspect pay-outs, such as the Sh4.9 million granted to a consultant to confirm the classification of a hospital already listed as a Level 5 facility, says Jim Okwako. “He must reshuffle. especially his finance team to stand a re-election chance in 2027.”

Sixth city • Meru Town is poised to become the sixth city in the country after Eldoret, says Jediel Muthuri, keenly watching President William Ruto’s movements. “A number of developments are lined up. They include the building of a state lodge, a golf course, and a Level 6 hospital, and the dualling of 17 kilometres of the main road in the town. Meru may just overtake Thika.” His contact is [email protected].

Predictability • The short rainy season is here and people are rushing to prepare their farms for planting, says F. Mukembu. “The rains seem to have come earlier than expected and some farmers don’t know whether to plant or wait a little. The Meteorological Department has been making reliable weather forecasts. It should continue so that farmers are not frustrated.” His contact is [email protected].

Have a predictable day, won’t you!
