Ease CBE transition
The learners expected to join Grade 10 next year will know the senior schools before Christmas. This is a source of anxiety, especially for the parents of these young people at this vital transition stage in the Competency-Based Education (CBE).
It should give parents adequate time to prepare their children to report to school on January 12. Some 1.1 million junior school learners are eagerly waiting for their Grade 9 test results. Only the top candidates will be assured of placement in their preferred schools.
After the release of the Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) results, the placement will be done electronically by the Ministry of Education and the admission letters issued through the National Education Management Information System (Nemis). Learners will be allowed to change their school choices at least two weeks before the Grade 10 reporting date.
This will be the first cohort of the Grade 9 learners to join senior secondary school. Indeed, the government has come increasingly under pressure, as it implements the CBE transition.
As the 1,130,669 pioneers move to the next level, the education sector is facing serious challenges. However, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba has given an assurance that adequate preparations have been made.
The junior-to-senior school transition is a milestone in the CBE. It comes just a year after the last batch of 1.4 million pupils sat the last KCPE exam in 2023 and joined Form One early last year.
Education authorities should ensure fair placement of learners and spare parents the agony of hunting for schools.
