From the hills to the global stage: How ABSA is backing champions

Kenya’s dominance in athletics is undisputed. For decades, Kenyan athletes have dominated long-distance races, bagging medals and accolades all over the world. And behind the smashed world records, electrifying sprints to the finish line and Kenya’s national anthem played on foreign land, Absa Bank has been right there, elevating known stars to greatness, nurturing the up-and-coming, and showing the world that our home stage can also light up as bright as the Olympics stadium.

Six years ago, Absa Bank took up the title sponsorship of the KipKeino Classic – an international athletics competition named after the legendary Kenyan athlete, Kipchoge Keino. Our collaboration with the Kip Keino Classic is one of the key pillars of our larger sponsorship strategy, embedded in our overall strategic vision.

In an interesting twist that we absolutely love, Kenyan athletes are no longer just dominating long races; they are also making history in the short sprints.

Earlier this year, Kenya’s 4 x 100m relay team booked a spot for the Tokyo Olympics, demonstrating the determination to excel in short races too. The impressive achievement signals an evolving narrative in the future of athletics in Kenya. It proves that with support and empowerment, our sportsmen and women can redefine possibilities.

Absa is proud to be associated with this development by supporting the growth of athletics on and off the tracks, while asserting Kenya’s place as a well-rounded sporting nation.

For the sixth year running, Absa Bank rolled out the red carpet to welcome some of the world’s track and field elite athletes who touched down in Nairobi for the monumental Kip Keino Classic. This event is not just your ordinary athletics meeting. It has become a global meet where talent is unlocked and propelled to the world stage.

The roaring, chanting crowds and show-stopping races have proven to the world yet again that Kenya is the land of champions, and that we can also host thrilling, world-class events.

Competitions of such stature boost the economy through tourism and support to local enterprises. We remain committed to playing a pivotal role in positioning Kenya as a country of endless potential, through strategic partnerships and our deep-rooted investments in sport. Kip Keino Classic stands as powerful proof of Kenya’s ability to host the world, thanks to the country’s modernised sports infrastructure.

And we don’t just cheer from the side-lines. We have celebrated every story, every sprint, and every achievement because we believe that sports is more than just a competition. It is about going beyond possibilities. It is about creating opportunities for the next generation. It is about giving people a reason to dream. It is about celebrating excellence. And most importantly, it is about national unity, pride, and a tool to position Kenya as a beacon of global talent and influence.

As we reflect on this six-year journey, we remain committed to supporting our home-grown heroes from grassroots to the global stage and beyond. We believe their stories matter and are filled with possibilities, ambition, and resilience, all grounded in national pride. That is why every partnership must be rooted in purpose. We believe in investing in people while empowering Africa's future, together, one story at a time.
