American medical technology firm, GE HealthCare, has tapped Kenyan Dr Alex Oketch as the new General Manager for East Africa.

The leadership transition comes at a time when the Chicago-based company is seeking to deepen its regional presence and advance healthcare innovation across the continent.

The appointment of Dr Oketch, who has been serving in the position in an acting capacity over the past 11 months, will see the Business Daily’s Top 40 alumnus tasked with leading the company’s commercial strategy in East Africa.

Development footprints in Kenya

The role is concerned with strengthening local partnerships, expanding market share, and optimising resources to unlock the region’s full potential.

Dr Oketch brings to the role over two decades of leadership and industry experience, including more than 10 years with GE HealthCare and one and half years with GE Energy management.

Over the past 11 months, he has served as interim GM for East Africa, where he delivered strong results and provided stability during a period of transition.

GE HeathCare has development footprints in Kenya where in 2020 the firm collaborated with the Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital.

Driving commercial strategy

The partnership saw the establishment of a first publicly-owned comprehensive Integrated Molecular Imaging Centre for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Before joining the company, Dr Oketch held key roles at Cisco Systems, France Telecom, MTN Group, and Swift Global Limited, successfully driving commercial strategy across East and Sub-Saharan Africa.

Dr Oketch holds a PhD in Social Transformation (Governance) from Tangaza University and an MBA from Birmingham Business School (England), in addition to a Master of Arts and Bachelor’s degree in Development Studies from the Catholic University of Eastern Africa.

His leadership achievements have been nationally recognised, earning him the Order of the Grand Warrior of Kenya (2024) and a spot among the Top 40 Under 40 leaders (2021).
