In the lush plantations and rolling hills of Bomet County, five men are in prison cells, their freedom traded for the lives they took in moments of rage, jealousy or drunken folly.
Last week, Bomet High Court Judge Julius Ngarng'ar handed down the sentences, sending a clear message that the courts will not tolerate bloodshed.
On January 7, 2024, Daisy Chebet Mutai had gone shopping for her children in Embomos. On her way home, she called her boyfriend, Dennis Kiprotich Kirui, and they met at the Bomet County Tea Plantation.
According to court documents, Daisy asked Kirui why his phone was always busy. She took it and discovered he had been talking to another woman for a long time.
When she attempted to call the woman, Kirui pulled out a knife and stabbed her in the neck. He then fled on his motorcycle, leaving her to die in the plantation.
Kirui later surrendered at Kamwaura Police Station and was arrested. A post-mortem revealed that Daisy died from excessive bleeding due to a penetrating wound.
In a pre-sentence report ordered by the court, the community painted a picture of a man who abused drugs, especially bhang, and said tensions between the two families remained volatile.
The victim's mother, Rose Mwei, suffered immense psychological trauma and found it difficult to come to terms with the loss. The family wanted nothing to do with a non-custodial sentence.
Kirui pleaded guilty to manslaughter. Judge Ngarng'ar sentenced him to 12 years' imprisonment, stating: "In my view, the accused deserves the sentence to discourage such actions."
In another case, Weldon Kipkoech Rono was a boda boda rider who ferried his neighbour, Jackson Koech, home on the night of September 15, 2024.
The two had been drinking together and were both intoxicated. About 400 metres from Bondet Market, a scuffle broke out between them. Koech fell from the motorcycle.
The court heard that what followed was brutal. Rono began hurling stones at Koech, who was lying in a trench bleeding.
Two women, Eunice Mutai and Daisy Cherono, witnessed the attack and pleaded with Rono to stop.
They testified that he fled on his motorcycle but was later traced to his house, where bloodstained clothes were recovered. A post-mortem report presented in court showed that Koech died from severe head injuries caused by blunt-force trauma.
The community described Rono as hardworking and capable of reform. He expressed deep remorse and initiated reconciliation efforts, but the victim's family had not consented to reconciliation. They opposed a non-custodial sentence.
Rono pleaded guilty to manslaughter. The judge noted that a life was lost unnecessarily and, on July 16, 2026, sentenced him to 12 years' imprisonment.
Emmanuel Kirui, alias Kimonda, faced the full weight of the law after a full trial found him guilty of murdering Benard Biegon on July 5, 2020, at Nyamarenda Village.
Kirui expressed deep remorse and had personally asked his family to initiate reconciliation with the victim's family, but the process stalled because the victim's family refused to give them an audience.
The community described Kirui as a young, hardworking man with no prior conflicts. However, the victim's family remained deeply aggrieved, citing the heavy financial burden and emotional pain caused by the loss.
They were particularly bitter that Kirui had not informed them immediately that he had injured their relative, which could have allowed them to take him to hospital. He lived only 200 metres away but chose to hide.
On Thursday, July 16, 2026, the judge sentenced him to 15 years' imprisonment.
On June 21, 2023, Ismael Kipngeno Langat came home and found his father, Harrison Kiplangat Cheruiyot, there.
While there, he heard two loud screams from the house.
He rushed back and found Violet Mwajuma Ambell, his son's girlfriend, lying in a pool of blood with a deep cut on her neck. His son was standing over her with a panga in his hand.
When he asked why he had cut her, the accused pointed the panga at his father and asked: "Do you want me to include you?" The father ran away screaming, attracting members of the public.
According to the judgment, the offence was triggered after the victim found seductive text messages on the accused's phone and threatened to end the relationship.
The accused, described by the community as temperamental and violent, grabbed a panga and slashed her neck. A post-mortem revealed that she had been nearly decapitated.
The community described Langat as troublesome and said he always resorted to violence as a means of resolving conflict. They called for a long-term custodial sentence due to rising cases of femicide.
Langat pleaded guilty to manslaughter and, on July 15, 2026, was sentenced to 15 years' imprisonment.
Joshua Kimutai Ngeno was the paternal uncle of Harun Kipkirui Ngetich. On January 8, 2023, the two went for a drink at a local alcohol den.
On their way home, an altercation ensued. Ngeno drew a knife and stabbed his nephew in the chest. The victim screamed, and members of the public came to his aid. He was taken to Kapkatet Hospital but died while receiving treatment.
The community described Ngeno as hardworking and responsible before his arrest. He expressed deep remorse and accepted full responsibility. However, the victim's family was still grappling with emotional pain and strongly opposed a non-custodial sentence.
Ngeno pleaded guilty to manslaughter. The judge sentenced him to 10 years' imprisonment, saying: "A life was lost unnecessarily. In my view, the accused must serve a custodial sentence."
Across all five cases, Judge Ngarng'ar emphasised the gravity of taking a life. He noted that sentencing serves multiple purposes, including delivering justice and protecting the community.
In each case, the judge weighed the community's views contained in the pre-sentence reports, the victim families' pain and the accused persons' remorse. But in the end, custodial sentences were deemed necessary.
