A medic at a private hospital in Kiambu has been charged with rape of a patient.
The woman, 26, had visited Plainsview Hospital in Ruiru to consult a gynaecologist on Saturday, November 16.
She paid the requisite registration and consultation fee of Sh2,000 and was put on the waiting line to see a gynaecologist.
The gynaecologist advised her to undergo a pelvic scan. She was referred to a radiographer identified as Robert Kiplangat.
While in the room, Mr Kiplangat advised her to remove her trousers and undergarments.
He briefly left the radiology room and shortly returned with two bananas claiming the hospital lacked the necessary medical equipment.
Mr Kiplangat reportedly told the patient that he would put a condom on a banana as part of the procedure.
The victim told police that the medic asked her to lie sideways on the bed facing the wall.
She later told police that she felt an unusually painful contraction and when she turned, she found Mr Kiplangat was partially undressed.
The victim screamed for help but the door was locked from inside. Mr Kiplangat warned her not to raise the alarm but her screams had already attracted the attention of other patients and the hospital management.
It later emerged that Mr Kiplangat had substituted the Pelvic Scan with a transvaginal test, contrary to the recommendation of the gynaecologist.
The victim reported the complaint at Ruiru Police Station which recorded it under OB No 59 of 16/25. The victim was examined at Ruiru Level 4 Hospital.
Mr Kiplangat has since been arrested and was subsequently arraigned at Ruiru Law Courts on November 19.
He denied sexual assault charges and was released on a cash bail of Sh200,000. But he is in remand as he was unable to raise the bail.
The victim has appealed to well-wishers to provide her with psychological counselling and legal representation. She has also urged the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) and the Ministry of Health to investigate the matter.
Ruiru sub-County Police Commander Alex Shikondi on Sunday told Nation.Africa that the suspect was arraigned at Ruiru Law Courts and is in remand.
‘’The rape incident claim at Plainsview Hospital was indeed brought to our attention by the victim and we swiftly acted and arrested the suspect. He was arraigned in court last week on Tuesday and he denied the charges. He was released on a bond of Sh200,000 which he was unable to pay and is currently held at Thika Remand,’’ Mr Shikondi said.
Reached for comment on Friday, Plainsview Hospital told Nation.Africa to channel the media queries to the email address listed on their official website immediately. By the time of publishing the story, the hospital had not responded.
Plainsview Hospital is a popular health facility in Ruiru targeting low-income earners, especially those previously covered by the National Hospital Insurance Fund now Social Health Authority.
On its official website, it lists itself as a Level 4 hospital offering both inpatient and outpatient services in maternity, dental, optical, dialysis and ambulance services.
The sex scandal at the hospital ignites the sad memories of James Mugo Ndichu alias Dr Mugo wa Wairimu who was exposed by undercover reporters for sedating his patients to rape them at his clinic that was located in Githurai 44, Kamiti Road, Nairobi county.
He was later arraigned before Milimani Law Courts and was sentenced to 11 years in prison.
