Three people have died after a quarry collapsed in Malindi amid heavy rainfall on Thursday afternoon.

The incident happened at Muyeye quarry in Malindi Town, Kilifi County.

Kilifi County Criminal Investigations Officer Robert Kiinge said two women and one man died after a stone wall caved in on them.

“...The top hanging ground collapsed, burying individuals therein,” he said.

One survivor was rescued and rushed to Malindi Sub-County Hospital, where she is in stable condition.

Police say there were only four people in the quarry during the incident.

“The scene is cleared and we advice members of the public to avoid quarry activities, especially during this rainy season,” he said.

The rescue operation was led by Malindi police and the Kilifi County Government rescue team.

Mr Katana Thoya, an witness, said the incident happened due to heavy rains.

"We are used to digging stones in this quarry, but today the rain was heavy and the stone could not hold itself...it caved in," he said.
