The smoke never stopped rising.
For more than four days and four nights, glowing charcoal kept rows of grills alive at Swahilipot Hub in Mombasa as 31-year-old Chef Yusuf Garani battled exhaustion in his quest to become the new Guinness World Record holder for the Longest Barbecue Marathon.
His hands never seemed to tire. He carefully turned beef over the fire, brushed chicken with marinade, roasted maize, cassava, arrowroots, Irish potatoes, carrots and capsicum, while hundreds of supporters watched the clock inch closer to history.

When the timer crossed the 100-hour mark on Friday, August 7, 2026, the crowd erupted into cheers. Friends hugged each other, family members danced, and supporters waved Kenyan flags as the self-taught chef surpassed the previous Guinness World Record set by South Africa's Gielie Basson in 2025.
Yet, for Yusuf, breaking the record was never enough.
"I want to push it to 130 hours so that the next person who attempts it will have to work even harder. I want to leave behind a record that will be difficult to break," he said, smiling despite the fatigue etched across his face.
The marathon marks Yusuf's second attempt at earning a place in the Guinness World Records, a journey defined by resilience as much as culinary skill.
In the wee hours of August 8, Chef Yusuf officially set a new record for the Longest Barbecue Marathon, completing an incredible 134 hours of nonstop barbecue.
Last year, Mr Yusuf cooked continuously for 100 hours in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the longest home kitchen cooking marathon. Although he surpassed the existing mark, his effort was never officially recognised because of technical shortcomings in the documentation submitted for verification.
Chef Yusuf chose a different path. "I didn't lose hope. I wanted to show young people that setbacks are not the end of a dream," he said.
Instead of dwelling on failure, he spent months planning another attempt — this time focusing on barbecue.
Breaking a Guinness World Record requires much more than endurance. Every minute must be documented, every break recorded and every movement verified.
During his previous attempt, Yusuf and his team learned just how demanding the process could be.
This time, they left nothing to chance.
Independent witnesses monitored the challenge, cameras documented every moment, while officials ensured every Guinness guideline was followed.
"The lesson we learnt is that cooking is only half the challenge. The other half is proving that you followed every rule," said his manager, Juma Athman.
Unlike elite sporting competitions backed by major sponsors, Yusuf's marathon depended largely on community support.
Friends worked in shifts. Volunteers managed logistics. Businesses donated supplies. Family members stayed awake through the night, while strangers travelled from different parts of the country simply to cheer him on.
"So many people have come to support this marathon. It shows young people are ready to support one another," Chef Yusuf said.
Among his strongest supporters was Swahilipot Hub founder Mahmoud Noor, who believes the marathon carries a much bigger message than breaking a world record.
"When young people see Yusuf's determination, they realise they can also pursue their dreams. This is much bigger than cooking," he said.

One of the sponsors, Ms Amina Hussein, described the marathon as proof that Kenyan youth can compete on the global stage.
"It is a big opportunity for young people who believe in bigger dreams," she said.
As the hours stretched into days, fatigue became Chef Yusuf's greatest opponent.
Sleep deprivation affects concentration, balance and decision-making, yet every meal still had to meet professional standards.
Guinness rules allowed him only five minutes of rest for every hour worked, which he accumulated into a one-hour break after every 12 hours.
His friend, Dorcas Kwamboka, who holds the Guinness World Record for making three chapatis in two minutes and 26.92 seconds, travelled to Mombasa to support him and explain the demanding rules.
"Many people keep asking whether he sleeps or bathes. Yes, he does. The rules allow five minutes of rest every hour, but he combines them into one hour after every 12 hours," she explained.
Throughout the marathon, Swahilipot Hub became more than a cooking arena.
Musicians entertained the crowds, artists showcased their talents and young entrepreneurs displayed their products, transforming the venue into a celebration of youth creativity.
Repeatedly, Yusuf used the platform to encourage young people not to abandon their talents.
"If I can do this, others can also achieve their dreams. Whatever your talent is, use it well," he said.
Chef Yusuf says his late mother inspired his love for cooking and encouraged him to pursue his passion.
After working as a sous chef during previous Guinness attempts by Chef Maliha Mohamed, he finally found the confidence to launch his own challenge.
"My team, my family and my late mum inspired me to take this step. At first, I doubted myself, but eventually I accepted the challenge," he said.
Securing sponsorship proved difficult, forcing Yusuf's team to rely on crowdfunding and volunteers after several organisations declined to support the project.
"People thought we were too small for such a huge dream. Thankfully Kenyans believed in us," he said.
For Mr Yusuf, the marathon is about far more than personal achievement.
He hopes his success will inspire chefs, artists, innovators and ordinary young Kenyans to believe that world-class achievements are possible regardless of their background.
Official recognition will now depend on Guinness World Records reviewing the extensive evidence submitted after the marathon, a process that could take several weeks.
Until then, he waits. But unlike his first attempt, he waits with confidence. He knows the rules. He knows the process. Most importantly, he knows that one setback does not define a dream.
Standing before the glowing barbecue after more than four relentless days of roasting beef, chicken, maize, cassava and vegetables, Chef Yusuf has already achieved something no certificate alone can measure.
He has shown that resilience, like the finest barbecue, is built slowly through patience, sacrifice and the courage to begin again after disappointment.
