Confusion rocks the identity of a man believed to be the prime suspect in the murders of more than 40 women whose mutilated bodies were discovered in a quarry in Nairobi County.

The suspect was arrested following an altercation with fellow travellers in a matatu, which was enroute to the Western region. The driver drove to Naivasha Police Station and handed over the man to police officers.

According to Nakuru County Police Commander Emmanuel Epuru, after interrogation, the suspect is said to have identified himself to the officers as Collins Jumaisi Khalusha, the man who was accused of the Kware killings and has been on the run since he escaped from police custody in August last year.

“We have a suspect of such a nature who alleges to be the man we have been looking for. We have not concretely established his identity but he is in custody. He confessed he is the one but we have not presented him to court, until we verify his identity. We do not want to find ourselves in an awkward situation, if it turns out he is not the one,” said the county police boss.

“What is going on now is the process of identifying the person. He can say that he is the one but he later says a different thing. He alleges that he was on his way to either Uganda or Tanzania. He said that he has been hiding in Mathare and Mukuru kwa Njenga.”

However, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has dismissed the reports, terming the information of the re-arrest as false.

On their social media platform, the DCI noted that Jumaisi still remains at large and appealed to members of the public with information about his whereabouts to report. The DCI said that they remain committed to arresting and holding him accountable for the horrific crimes he has committed.

The DCI maintained the cash reward of Sh1 million will be paid to anyone who provides information leading to Jumaisi’s arrest.

“Our attention has been drawn to information circulating online regarding the re-arrest of Collins Jumaisi, the prime suspect in the grisly Kware murders, who escaped from Gigiri Police Station in August 2024. We wish to clarify that the information about his re-arrest is false; he remains at large,” the agency said in a statement.

“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the members of the public for their invaluable support and cooperation in this ongoing search for Jumaisi. Your willingness to share information and assist in the effort is greatly appreciated.”
