Residents of Lavington, Gigiri, Parklands and Kitisuru had complained of discoloured water coming from their taps.
Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company has confirmed that the discoloured water witnessed in some estates receiving supply from Nairobi’s western area was due to a pipeline flush.
According to the company’s Acting Managing Director, Martin Nang’ole, the incident caused panic among customers in Westlands, Parklands, Kitisuru, Loresho and Kilimani, but was later resolved by the team.
Residents of Lavington, Gigiri, Parklands and Kitisuru had complained of discoloured water coming from their taps on Thursday. Following the complaints, their resident associations and estate management teams raised alarm.
“We wish to inform you that we have experienced an unexpected inflow of heavily discoloured water from the City Council supply, which has unfortunately contaminated our storage tanks. As a result, the complex is currently experiencing brown water coming through the taps,” a message from one of the estate management teams said.
“We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused and kindly request your patience as we address this matter. We will continue to keep you updated on the progress and expected timelines for full restoration.”
Pipe maintenance
Mr Nang’ole said the incident was an isolated matter that arose during routine pipe maintenance.
“There was a breakdown on our Sasumua–Kabete pipeline on November 20, 2025, which affected supply and discoloured the water. However, our staff responded promptly and managed to repair the pipe and resume supply,” Mr Nang’ole told the Nation.
Mr Nang’ole added that the affected areas were isolated and the pipeline flushed, thus restoring the normal water supply.
“The technical team is in the affected area and is continually flushing the line to ensure water quality is restored. Customers with any issues are advised to contact our water quality team in Kabete.”
According to the company, the maintenance team said they had never seen a similar issue before but confirmed that the incident did not affect water supply.
