At least four bodies have been retrieved from the rubble of a collapsed building at Blue Estate in Shauri Moyo, while three people have been successfully rescued as at 6pm Monday. Search and rescue of several others feared trapped is ongoing.
The five-storey building collapsed during a demolition exercise meant to remove structures from the riparian corridor of Nairobi River.

Locals told the Nation that people trapped were scavenging for metal in the empty houses marked for destruction by the government.
The building came tumbling down at around 2pm, but locals say the rescue teams arrived late.

The planned demolition was meant to pave the way for expansion of Nairobi River.
According to an earlier statement from the Ministry of Defence, the rescue operation is being conducted by a multi-agency team comprising the Kenya Defence Forces' Disaster Response Batallion, Kenya Red Cross, Nairobi County, National Police Service and National Government Administrative Officers. Others are the November Rapid Response Team and China Energy.

Nairobi North County Commissioner Simon Osumba said the number of individuals still trapped remains unknown.
"The victims were removing steel bars and other construction materials from the abandoned structure when it caved in," said Mr Osumba in a statement.
