A woman arrested after the Eastleigh triple murder is a student at a private university who told police she was released by her abductor after her family paid ransom.
The woman, who was found with bruises on her body, told police she had been held by Hashim Dagane Muhumed.
Hashim, who is in custody, is the main suspect in the murders of Waris Daud, 38, her 12-year-old daughter Nuseiba Dahir and her niece Amina Abdirashad, 23. Police have also linked him to the murder of another woman whose bones were found at Lang'ata cemetery.
A family source told the Nation that the woman made frantic calls to relatives, begging them to send money to save her from a harrowing ordeal.
Ethiopian bank account
The family transferred the money to an Ethiopian bank account, which bought her freedom.
“She really made calls saying that she had witnessed what she has never seen in her life. She was sending messages through WhatsApp,” said the family member.
The Nation cannot reveal the woman's name because her identity is protected.
When she appeared in court last week, the media was barred from covering the proceedings.
However, on Friday, November 8, she will appear in court and a decision will be made as to whether she is a suspect in the murders or a prosecution witness.
The Nation understands that another suspect, known only as Abdi, is being held at Muthaiga police station in connection with the murder of the trio.
Mr Hashim, 24, was the driver of a Nissan Note that was captured on CCTV cameras picking Nuseiba and Amina up from their home in Eastleigh around 9pm on October 21 when they went missing.
They had gone to check on Warid at a medical facility in a nearby shopping centre because she was taking too long and not answering her phone.
Bodies scattered in different locations
Hours later, their bodies were found scattered in different locations, according to a statement from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
The vehicle was later found abandoned at Wakulima Market, not far from the area where two of the bodies were discovered at around 6am on Tuesday, October 22.
Nuseiba's body was found at Bahati in Makadara and Amina's at 6th Avenue Parklands. The body of Waris, who had no limbs, was found at Kyumbi in Machakos, 30km from Eastleigh. Her severed hands were discovered at South C along Five Star Road.
National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) records show that Mr Hashim had an interim driving licence issued on February 22, 2024, which had expired on August 22, 2024.
