Details have emerged on how detectives tracked down and arrested a suspected serial killer who has allegedly confessed to being behind more than six gruesome murders in Narok town and its environs.

Stephen Oloichoki, alias Musa Sopia, an ex-jailbird was cornered after police used his phone and CCTV footage to track his movements.

The suspect, who was arrested at the weekend, has also been linked to a series of violent robberies that rocked Narok town in recent months.

"Investigators forensically analysed evidence on the reported murders and robberies, leading to the identification of the lethal serial killer," revealed Director of Criminal Investigations Amin Mohamed.

"The suspect, Stephen Oloichoki alias Ololung’a, alias Musa Sapia, was arrested in a multi-agency operation that led to the recovery of several mobile phones believed to be proceeds of crime.”

According to detectives, a mobile phone stolen from one of the victims was a big breakthrough for investigators.

Forensic data retrieved from the phone led to the arrest of the suspect. Intelligence analysis and CCTV footage also gave away the man believed to be the prime suspect in a series of murders reported in Narok.

Nation.Africa has established that the suspect was captured on CCTV leaving the scene of one of the murders.

Police say Oloichoki was captured by CCTV on October 28 leaving the scene of the gruesome murder of a local businessman at Ololulunga area in Narok, where he was also captured attempting to break into a shop.

It was established that the suspect had been sentenced to life imprisonment, but was released in March 2024 after serving 15 years in prison.

Robbery with violence

Oloichoki had been handed a life sentence for a violent robbery by a Narok court in 2009, only to be released 15 years later, in March 2024, after an appeal.

Even so, his previous life in crime quickly caught up with him.

Several murders and violent robberies have been reported in Narok town and its neighbourhood in the past months, prompting detectives to launch a manhunt for the masterminds of the criminal activities.

In the incidents, a hooded lone attacker was reported to be accosting business operators in the town, before striking them down with a blunt object and disappearing with their valuables.

Most of the victims succumbed to the head hits. The reports left security agents scratching their heads, but critical analysis of forensic evidence led to the arrest of Oloichoki, who was found with a dagger, a sword and a Maasai rungu.

At the time of arrest, Oloichoki was wearing the same clothes he was spotted putting on in the CCTV footage.

Criminal activities

According to Mr Mohamed, the suspect has since confessed to several attacks and showed investigators places where he sold the valuables stolen from his victims, leading to the arrest of three more suspects.

The three are believed to be accomplices in h Oloichoki’s criminal activities.

Under investigation are six deaths in which Oloichoki is implicated, all committed between April and October 2024.

Among the murder incidents the suspects have been linked to is the gruesome murder of Narok businessman Hillary Leken Ololdapash on September 20.

Mr Ololdapash was brutally murdered and his body was recovered near an entertainment joint in Narok town.

Another incident is a violent robbery that was reported under OB No. 04/26/08/2024, where Wycliffe Weiseku Nyanchoka was killed.

As the horrendous murders rocked Narok town, still in September 2024, Joel Maina Kweri became a victim after he was robbed and brutally murdered.

Onyango Omollo was the fourth victim to meet his death in the same manner, allegedly by the same lone attacker.

In another incident recorded under OB No. 85/30/07/2024, Linet Mmbone, a trader in the town was also robbed and injured.

The 38-year-old later succumbed to her injuries. The most recent killing linked to the suspect was that of Moses Sanigo.

This series of murders and robberies shocked residents of Narok town, who have been living in fear.

Investigators now say appropriate charges, including robbery with violence, will be preferred against him when he will be arraigned in court.

The suspect is being held at the Narok Police Station, helping detectives with investigations.
