33 hospitalised in Nyamira after consuming contaminated meat

More than 30 residents of Nyakeore village in Nyamira County have been admitted to the hospital with suspected food poisoning.
The 33 patients at Nyamira County Teaching and Referral Hospital developed health complications after eating contaminated meat.
The Nyamira County Public Health Department confirmed the incident, stating that the residents exhibited symptoms including acute diarrhoea and stomach aches.
A team of health officers dispatched to the scene by Nyamira Teaching and Referral Hospital established that the villagers had feasted on a neighbour's cow that had died a couple of days earlier.

Test samples pointed to possible food poisoning, according to information released by the County Health Department.
"The Health Department of Nyamira County has reported an incidence of acute food poisoning at Nyakeore Village, Nyamira South Sub-County, after 33 people consumed a cow carcass,” read a statement from the Nyamira County government.
It continued, “The county disease surveillance team received the information and evacuated the 33 people to Nyamira County Teaching and Referral Hospital who have been treated and are now in stable condition,”
A multi-agency team is scheduled to visit the village later today to conduct contact tracing and analyse the situation comprehensively.
Meanwhile, the county has urged members of the public to exercise maximum caution when consuming meat and to maintain high levels of hygiene to avert future crises.
