It was supposed to be a tranquil escape into the wild, an opportunity for a family of four to immerse themselves in the breathtaking landscapes of Tsavo East National Park.

But as the sun set on Monday evening, concern mounted after the family had failed to check out from their scheduled camping trip.

What followed was a race against time by the Tsavo emergency response team to rescue the family, whose whereabouts were unknown.

According to a press release by the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), the couple, accompanied by their two young children, had entered the park through Manyani Gate on Saturday, at 5:40pm, eager to experience two nights at the Luggards Falls.

However, their planned departure via Sala Gate by Monday evening never materialised after their vehicle became immobilised after an unexpected detour from their designated route.

When they did not check out by the 8pm deadline, KWS sprang into action and activated a search-and-rescue operation that spanned for more than 24 hours, covering vast stretches of the park.

At 9:30 am on Tuesday, Tsavo Trust pilot Nick Haller, who was part of the team conducting the aerial search, located the lost family approximately 50 kilometres North of the family’s intended route.

"When they failed to check out by the 8pm deadline, park authorities launched an immediate search operation. Preliminary reports indicate that the family's vehicle became immobilised during an unauthorised deviation from their planned route while on a game drive," KWS said in a statement.

Found unharmed

The family members were found unharmed, though visibly exhausted at Kabaguchi Ranger Camp at Yatta Plateau.

According to KWS, it started as an organised ground search on Monday night where the teams combed through the Luggards Falls-Sala Gate route, hoping to find any trace of the missing visitors.

During the overnight search, the KWS teams found abandoned camping gear at the campsite but no indication of where they had gone next.

In the early hours of Tuesday, an aerial support of two fixed-wing aircraft and one helicopter was deployed.

The family underwent routine medical evaluations at a hospital in Voi, Taita Taveta, as officers from KWS conducted to establish the details of the incident on how they became disoriented and what measures could prevent similar incidents in the future.

“This successful operation highlights the strength of Kenya’s emergency response protocols and the value of inter-agency collaboration. We commend the sharp vigilance of Pilot Nick Haller and the dedication of all teams involved in the rescue,” KWS said.
