A medical student was stabbed to death in Trans Nzoia County, just days before his graduation.

Benedict Kiptoo, 24, a third-year student at the Kenya Medical Training College Kitale campus, was due to graduate on Thursday, December 5, 2024, but was stabbed to death on Sunday morning following a disagreement with his girlfriend.

The alleged assailant, a hotel waitress, 24, allegedly stabbed Mr Kibet in a suspected love triangle.

According to neighbours, the two lived together in the Kibomet area on the outskirts of Kitale town, but their relationship was marred by differences.

Dr Evans Letting, who administered first aid to Mr Kiptoo, said he died from excessive bleeding.

"He knocked on my door asking for medical attention but he was bleeding profusely. We rushed him to Wamalwa Kijana Teaching Referral Hospital but he was not attended to on time, forcing us to take him to Cherangany Nursing Home where he was pronounced dead on arrival," Dr Letting said.

Trans Nzoia Deputy County Police Commander Salesio Muriithi said the suspect was still at large.

"We are pursuing her. Once we get her, we will prefer murder charges," Mr Muriithi said.

Gladys Kipkorir, the mother of the deceased and a resident of Sacho, Baringo County, expressed grief over the death of her first-born son.

The grieving family said they were not aware of his relationship with the suspect.

"We are calling on the police to be quick and arrest the suspect. This is very painful for me as a mother and all I want now is justice for my son," the mother said.

The mother revealed that her son had just picked his graduation gown in Nairobi last week.

"My son was preparing to graduate on Thursday this week. I have lost my son who was my pillar, he is gone and no one will ever replace him and we need justice to be served," she added.

Mr Kiptoo's uncle, Japheth Kipkorir, described his nephew as a creative, calm and intelligent person who had a promising future to support his family.

"We had very high expectations of him. We have lost an icon with good entrepreneurial skills and I suspect that is what the lady saw in him and did not want to lose," he said.

He noted that Kiptoo was also into the beauty business and was very good at nail-polishing and other beauty services.

The body of the deceased is at the Cherangany Nursing Home mortuary as detectives launch investigations into the events that led to his untimely death.

This comes as the Trans Nzoia County Director of Health, Sam Ojwang', warned the youth against engaging in abusive relationships that have led to increased cases of femicide.
