Police in Wajir have arrested a man found ferrying bhang worth Sh1.75 million.

The suspect, who was driving a Toyota Landcruiser, was arrested on Friday evening after a tip off from the members of the public.

Eldas Deputy County Commissioner Vincent Lomachar said the suspect was driving from Moyale to Isiolo.

“This is the third incident in the area since the beginning of the year. Smugglers prefer the route in order to escape security checkpoints on the main highway," Mr Lomachar said.

The DCC added that the will be charged in court on Monday.

He called on the residents to share important information with security agencies in order to help combat drug smuggling in the region.

"We are asking the residents to be on the lookout for such individuals and work with the authorities to ensure that we stop this illegal business," he added.

Mr Lomachar further said that authorities are stepping up efforts in combating the vice.

Most of the narcotics that makes its way into the country through the region originate from the neighbouring Ethiopia.
