The family of the late Beatrice Wairimu Mbugua, popularly known as Betty Bayo, has formally requested the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) to institute an inquest into the circumstances surrounding her sudden death, citing unanswered questions and suspected foul play.

Through their lawyers, Omenke Andeje & Company Advocates, the family, led by her mother, Joyce Wairimu Mbugua, says they have endured “unbearable pain” trying to understand how a young woman (Betty) with no known history of illness could die so abruptly.

In a letter dated December 9, 2025, the lawyers told the DPP that the family strongly believes Betty’s death may not have been natural.

According to the advocates, the family claims that

Betty had no known underlying medical condition prior to her death.

The family also states it was denied access to an autopsy report, despite requesting one. They were never given Betty’s medical records or informed about the treatment she may have been receiving before she died.

Family members are concerned about the manner in which the burial was conducted, stating it was hurried and ‘raises suspicion that crucial details surrounding her death may have been concealed.’

The advocates argue that these inconsistencies have left the family with more questions than answers. They now want the ODPP to direct the Inspector-General of Police to launch a formal inquest, as provided for under Articles 26(3), 35, and 157(4) of the Kenyan Constitution.

The family insists that an independent investigation is necessary not only to establish the cause of death but also to bring closure to those she left behind.

“The family expresses their utmost disdain and demands urgent action,” the letter states.

The gospel singer passed away on November 10, 2025, while receiving treatment at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).
