Breaking Zuchu's WCB contract would cost a staggering Sh523m
Tanzanian Musician Zuchu entertains during their CHAN finals match between Madagascar and Morocco at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani on August 30, 2025.
Bongo flava sensation Zuchu says she has no plans to leave the WCB record label, as she is in a relationship with its founder, Diamond Platnumz.
The singer signed with the label in April 2020, after being on probation for years, and has grown to become one of the label's highest revenue generators.
WCB contracts with artistes dictate that the label takes 60 percent of the revenue generated by each of its artiste while the artiste is left with 40 percent.
In recent years, the label has lost some of its best talent, with several all those who left leaving before the expiry of their contracts.
Harmonize, the label’s first signee, left in 2019, growing frustrated with the 60–40 revenue split, arguing that his contract was exploitative.
He was forced to pay the label Tsh500 million (Sh25 million) to buy out the remainder of his ten-year contract, having served barely half of it.
Then came Rayvanny, who left the label in July 2022 after six years, also opting to buy out the remainder of his contract by paying a hefty sum of over Sh50 million.
Mbosso Khan is the most recent artist to leave the label, although Diamond opted not to accept the Pawa hitmaker's offer to buy out the remainder of his contract.
There is also a rumour that Lava Lava could be heading for the exit door, having struggled to match the success of the other WCB artists despite the label heavily investing in him.
With Zuchu now the label's only remaining bankable artist, questions have been raised as to whether she has considered leaving, having already made a name for herself.
“I wish all those who left all the best. I understand that at some point in life, you yearn for growth. But as for me, I don’t think I have any reason to want to leave WCB. After all, I got something going on between me and the label’s boss (In a relationship),” she says.
In 2022, Diamond stated that Zuchu would need to pay TSh10 billion (Sh523 million) to terminate her contract prematurely.
The figure reflects the label’s substantial investment in activating her career from branding, promotions, marketing, production and collaborations.
