Lynder Matiko is a name that resonates with the soul of Rhumba music. At just 24 years old, this talented Kenyan singer, songwriter, and performer has earned the title “Queen of Rhumba Music,” captivating audiences locally and internationally.
Born and raised in Migori County’s Kuria region, Lynder’s journey to musical stardom is as inspiring as her melodious voice.
Growing up in a musical family, Lynder’s love for music was nurtured from an early age.
Her father’s large cassette radio often filled their home with music, especially the sounds of Maroon Commandos, a favourite of her dad.
“Amka Kumekucha” was a morning staple, creating a rhythmic backdrop to her childhood.
From singing in church choirs to performing at local talent shows, Lynder honed her craft while gaining confidence and improving her vocal skills. Her early exposure to traditional Kuria songs further enriched her musical foundation, blending cultural roots with her growing passion for Rhumba.
Lynder recalls those early years with fondness.
“Growing up in Migori was so much fun with my family. I was mostly a happy child, loved by everyone. Music is embraced in our community, and it was always part of my life in school, church, and home,” she shares.
It was during these formative years that her unique voice and innate ability to connect with audiences began to shine through.
After completing high school in 2019, Lynder’s musical dream took a monumental leap when she joined the iconic Maroon Commandos band. This opportunity felt surreal to her, having admired the group for years. Performing with the band not only boosted her live performance skills but also exposed her to a wider audience, setting the stage for her solo career.
“When I got the opportunity to join them, it was like a dream come true. Maroon Commandos gave me a platform to grow as an artist, and their mentorship was invaluable.”
Her time with the band not only refined her artistry but also taught her the discipline and resilience required to thrive in the music industry.
“Performing with such a celebrated live band helped me perfect my stage presence and connect with live audiences in a powerful way,” she adds.
In 2023, Lynder launched her solo career, debuting with cover singles like “Franco de Mi Amor,” “Papa Lolo,” and “Mario.” These hits solidified her status as a Rhumba music icon.
Her unique approach to translating Lingala Rhumba songs into Swahili has endeared her to fans, making the genre more accessible to a broader audience.
“Now I get a lot of comments from fans saying I made them love Rhumba because they can finally understand it,” Lynder shares.
Her translations are more than just linguistic adaptations; they are heartfelt renditions that preserve the emotion and essence of the originals while making them relatable to Swahili-speaking audiences.
This innovative approach has helped Lynder carve out a distinct niche in the competitive music industry.
Challenges and triumphs
Transitioning from a group to a solo performer came with its challenges, including stiff competition in the music industry.
“The industry is full of talented artistes, and it’s not easy to stand out,” Lynder admits.
However, her determination and authenticity set her apart.
“Rhumba has a timeless sweetness,” she says. “It’s loved by all age groups and is easy to dance to. That inspired me to stick with it.”
One of her most memorable moments was performing alongside Mzee Freshly Mwamburi at a Rhumba extravaganza.
“I felt respected and valued for what I do,” she recalls.
This recognition motivated her to push even harder in her solo career.
Lynder’s rise to prominence wasn’t without personal challenges. She faced doubts and skepticism from some who questioned her ability to thrive in a male-dominated genre.
“As a young woman in Rhumba, I had to prove myself constantly. But my passion and the support of my fans kept me going,” she says.
Lynder’s music is shaped by legendary Rhumba artistes like Kanda Bongo Man, Mbilia Bel, Madilu, Franco, and Ferre Gola. Their mastery of melody and storytelling influences her own style, which resonates deeply with her fans.
“Their ability to convey powerful emotions through music has inspired me to craft songs that speak to the heart,” she explains.
Her covers often explore themes of life’s ups and downs, providing a relatable and emotional connection.
For Lynder, music is not just entertainment; it’s a medium to share stories and touch lives.
“The songs I cover reflect daily experiences, helping me and my audience find meaning and strength in the challenges we face,” she says.
Looking ahead, Lynder dreams of collaborating with Rhumba legends like Kanda Bongo Man and performing on even bigger stages both locally and internationally.
“My goal is to leave a legacy and build a strong foundation in the industry,” she says.
