Homa Bay county government is set to construct an ultra-modern market at Oyugis in Kasipul constituency at a cost of Sh250 million.

Governor Cyprian Awiti announced that work on the project — a partnership between the county government and the Ministry of Lands will commence in January 2016.

During a press conference at his office, Mr Awiti explained that the plan will see the construction of modern stalls, parking bays, new toilets and garbage handling equipment.

“Architects and engineers are working on the plans for the market. This is a major achievement for our people this financial year,” said Mr Awiti.

PROJECT APPROVED

He said the traders currently occupying the market will be relocated in a dignified and a well-organised manner to ensure they didn’t incur any loses.

He added: “I want to appeal to the business community and leaders from Kasipul to support this project and cooperate with the contractors.”

Mr Awiti said Oyugis had been picked for the project because it was the second biggest source of revenue after Homa Bay town.

A letter from the Head of the Directorate of Urban development at Ardhi House in Nairobi confirmed to Mr Awiti that funding for the Oyugis market project had been approved.

Mr Awiti said his government had initially allocated Sh20 million to the project but will spend more to supplement the donation by the national government.

“Today, I am very happy that my dream to improve the condition of the market has been realised. It has been difficult because some leaders opposed our efforts in building the market,” said the Mr Awiti.

He said the county was also looking for a development partner to out up a four-storey modern market in Homa bay town.

“We have started with Oyugis but we will extend similar projects to other sub counties. We remain grateful to the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Planning for the big support,” concluded Mr Awiti.
