There are many writers that work for local media houses such as the Nation Media Group that didn’t study journalism.
It would be liberating to be in a position that allows us to try a hand at different careers to see where our talent truly lies.
On Thursday this week, a young woman who had interned at the Nation a few years ago passed by my desk to say hello. She had requested to intern at the Features Desk, which I was heading at the time, and within just a few days, it was clear to me that she was a talented writer, and I was happy to teach her what I knew, having written for a long time.
What was interesting about her was that she had studied law, and had, in fact, graduated top of her class. But she never got to practice, instead she decided to seek writing experience, and what better place to get it than here.
