Jesus will use his power to make us perfect

Jesus Christ.

Many teachings of the Church are shared by all Christians. Some are controversial. Take, for instance, purgatory. With all due respect for those who would disagree, I think it’s one of the most consoling teachings.

I often feel exactly what Saint Paul felt when he said (Rom 7:14): “We are well aware that the Law is spiritual: but I am a creature of flesh and blood, sold as a slave to sin. I do not understand my own behaviour; I do not act as I mean to, but I do things that I hate.”

Here lies the great consolation. God is going to purify me and make me perfect. I am definitely not perfect yet. I doubt I will be any better by the time I die. But I trust that Jesus will use his infinite power to make me “perfect as our heavenly Father is perfect.” (Mt:48)

Think of it this way. Our bodies are far from perfect. But, as Saint Paul says (Phil 3:20-21): “The Lord Jesus Christ will transfigure these wretched bodies of ours into copies of his own glorious body, through the working of the power which he has, even to bring all things under his mastery.”

Just as he will do this for our bodies after we die, it will be even more important for him to do this for our souls. With power that he has as the Son of God, he will purge from my soul all the hidden attractions I feel towards pride, greed, lust and all the rest of the evil I have been sorry for but never managed to completely overcome.

That purging is the very definition of what the Church in ages past called purgatory.
